SurVey Results

After the initial meeting on 24th October, 2005, it was clear that all guests had ideas of what the community wanted but no-one actually knew what would benefit the community as a whole.

Kerri Marshall constructed a Community Survey form that was distributed through the 3 primary schools in the Somerville area.

15% of the surveys were returned via the schools community.  Apparently this is a good result.

The survey covered:

  • Maternal Health Services
  • Library
  • Parks
  • Roads
  • Public Transport
  • Aged Services
  • Kindergartens
  • Police
  • Teenagers
  • Sports - type, facilities currently available
  • Medical
  • Other

Analysis below:

Police Station

90% believe a Police Station is a necessity due to the growth of Somerville especially with the current teenage boredom.
Teenagers 80% believe teenagers are bored, they need more activities, youth groups, recreation facilities possibly better use of the Community Centre.
  • a night bus from Frankston and transport (buses) to Mornington and Karingal.
Skate Area 50% want a Skateboard Area/Park/Permanent Ramp
  • which creates other problems, skating for long hours-upsetting local residents; attracting other kids with cars; therefore girls problem & their safety etc etc
Transport 50% want improved timetables for trains and buses.
  • 40% do not use because it is inadequate
Medical 90% want more doctors with longer hours who bulk bill
Chemist with longer hours
Library 74% want a larger library with more books and better resources and an after hours chute and improved parking.
Sports

Majority who use facilities want:

  • Tennis club, club rooms and toilets improved with more courts

  • New kitchen at Jones Road

  • Basketball – Community Centre needs fans and/or better ventilation.

  • Netball – better rooms, courts & lighting.

  • More clubs – soccer, indoor sports facilities, etc

Maternal Frankston/Flinders Road maternal health & kindergarten facilities needs refurbishing (modernising)
Parks all parks need better equipment and maintenance and grass cut regularly
  •  Fruitgrowers needs full fencing and the rubbish cleaned up
  •  More parks especially down Clarendon
  • More trees, sun shades
Roads Bungower sealed between Coolart & Moorooduc Hwy
Grant, Eramosa east & west and Frankston/Flinders Road improved.
Speed humps in Clarendon Drive
Lower Somerville Road used as Dragway
Miscellaneous Rail Station needs upgrading
More child care
Road improvement in front of pool
Pedestrian crossing at Grant & Eramosa Roads

Some of these suggestions can be quiet easily achieve but unfortunately to community still have to lobby the council for simple items such as a 24 book return chute at the town library.

A police station is not needed but most definitely more police, cars and resources are a necessity at Hastings to service the wider area more efficiently and effectively.

A skate area is a must but location choice is extremely important.  Other councils have found a skate park area must be in a well lit and public location.  If not, other associated problems occur eg: young licenced drivers are attracted to areas where girls hang out and consequently further problems occur with this mix of the community.
