Strategy for Aboriginal Managed Land in Victoria

Project summary:

This project is a key new direction and initiative in building a strategic framework for Aboriginal managed lands in Victoria. The aim is to undertake and consolidate a State-wide land strategy, focused on Aboriginal managed Land which will enhance the integration of land management activities on these lands with those being undertaken by the wider community. Based on a similar initiative in South Australia , this strategy will feed an Indigenous perspective into catchment management strategies and national objectives and produce a statewide framework for Aboriginal catchment based strategies that highlight Indigenous resource management priorities and issues.

Description:

The main aim of this Draft Strategy is to present information on Aboriginal owned and managed lands throughout Victoria, to discuss a statewide framework for Indigenous land and water management, and make draft recommendations on sustainable resource management policies and programs, as they relate to the Indigenous people of Victoria.

It highlights Indigenous land and resource management issues and priorities and makes recommendations for change in a range of areas and for new programs or initiatives, which we hope will lead to improved access for Aboriginal land holders to existing sustainable NRM programs and processes, and far better relationships and partnerships between Indigenous land holders and NRM agencies.

The recommendations and strategic directions in this Draft Strategy are the stepping stones necessary to build partnerships, influence policy change, and improve access by Aboriginal land holders to resources for sustainable management of their lands. Institutional support, employment, training, infrastructure and access to resources are key on-ground needs for Aboriginal land holders. It is vital that real engagement and practical, concrete steps are taken to implement the strategies that will foster these core needs.

Current natural resource plans and strategies in Victoria are only recently embracing Aboriginal priorities. However, there is a lack of a strategy at a statewide level that addresses Aboriginal land management status, potential and priorities. This leads to poor potential for partnerships with the Aboriginal community.

A number of Indigenous issues and concerns, commonality and opportunities have been identified that are preventing Aboriginal land managers to manage their land sustainably. This project will address these.

The key to all this is recognition, respect and action! We look forward to hearing the views of the Victorian Aboriginal Community, natural resource management agencies and all those involved in making Victoria culturally and ecologically sustainable into the future.
