The Barrelman's Award
Over the past 15 years, our club has asked the principals of local primary schools to nominate a Year 6 student to receive The Barrelman's Award for Enthusiasm. The primary schools selected are: Ballam Park, Carrum Downs, Frankston, Overport, Rowellyn Park, Seaford North, Seaford Park, Seaford, St. Anne's and Nepean Special School.
This award is aimed at students who show enthusiasm, achievement, initiative and community awareness. Each awardee is presented with a book voucher. The books are chosen by the awardee and are later re-presented at a special Rotary dinner which family and friends are invited to attend. The Award is so-called because it was instigated by Les McNamara OAM, who is known as "The Barrelman" due to his ongoing project known as: "Operation Small Change". Under this project, collection barrels are placed in hospitals with the aim of collecting donations for the hospitals concerned.

The greatest celebration in Rotary's history commemorates the organisation's first one hundred years of service. In more than 31,000 communities worldwide, Rotary clubs organised centennial community projects that Celebrate Rotary while fulfilling an important need in their area.
To commemorate the 100th anniversary, the Rotary Club of Seaford-Carrum Downs ran a "Rotary Centenary Essay Competition", which was open to Year 7 students at Monterey, Patterson River and Carrum Downs Secondary Colleges.
The winner was Tyler White, Monterey Secondary College for his essay titled: "Rotary Camp". Tyler received $200.00 and a certificate.
The first runner-up was Tayla Wilson, Patterson River Secondary College for her essay: "Polio Eradication". The second runner-up was Patrick Bacon, Monterey Secondary College for his essay: "The Work of Rotary". Tayla and Patrick each received $100 and a certificate.
Monterey Secondary College was awarded $500.00, a Rotary Centenary Crystal Obelisk and a certificate.

Our congratulations go to the prize-winning students and to all of the students and faculty members participating in the competition. We were very pleased to have had excellent support for this program from all three secondary schools invited to participate. We plan to continue the competition in our next Rotary year.
