STAR advocates for the rights of people with an intellectual disability and their families. We believe people with an intellectual disability have the right to live as valued members in the community. We promote access to mainstream services and lobby government to provide more appropriate and adequate services.
STAR aims to empower families with information that can lead to informed choices and positive action. "Supporting Inclusive Schooling" booklets for parents and schools, are an example of the information resources available.
STAR helped in the establishment of "Interchange" for respite care," Parent to Parent", a network of groups and individuals for self-help parent support, and the "Citizen Advocacy Program" for community friendship networks. Since 1970 STAR has been at the forefront of lobbying the government for changes to the policies and practices relating to the provision of quality services for families and people who have an intellectual disability, so that they may take their place as valued citizens in the community.
