Heany Park Scout Group
To help celebrate Rowville’s Centenary Heany Park Scout Group planned and organised an open day at the Heany Park grounds on 2/10/05.
Local residents, Knox Councillors and Scouting representatives were invited to come along and see for themselves the unique natural bush environment and native surrounds that we have at Heany Park. Everyone was encouraged to join in the fun and help celebrate Rowville’s Centenary. The day was a huge success with over 200 people attending. Throughout the day we held organised tours of the Heany Park grounds showing people the lake, outdoor chapel and the original kiosk built in 1950’s. The children however thoroughly enjoyed the billycart races, climbing the monkey bridge, making damper, plaster painting and the ever-popular wood burning.
The public showed an overwhelming interest in planting 70 indigenous vegetation and removing environmental weeds.
On display, in the Scout hall was the extremely interesting history of the Heany Park grounds dating back to 1838, many people recalled coming to swim in the lake over 50 yrs ago and having family picnics at the park. The history of Scouting was also on display, which is now 97 years old. A birthday cake for Rowville’s 100 years was cut and presentations and speeches made. Heany Park Scout Group would like to thank all the local residents who came along to our open day, the comments and feedback about our dynamic Scout Group and unique environment was overwhelming. A special thankyou to Roy D’Andrea for his specific memories, Connie and Janet Fordham, the Gearon and Golding families for attending our special day.
