Apex Club of Rowville
The Centenary of Rowville Dinner was held at the Rowville Community Centre last month and we celebrated Rowville’s 100th birthday in style, with plenty of food, dancing and music. We would like to thank the Knox Council and the councillors for their support, LJ Hooker, Customized Catering, Bendigo Bank (Rowville Branch), Bryan Power, President of R-LC News for his speech, Telstra Shop Rowville and Honey B and the Stingers.
A great time was had by all as we celebrated into the night.
Don’t forget that the Rowville Centenary wines and Commemorative Glasses are still available for sale. Go to our website and place an order or phone Sean on 0414 787 830.
Apex Club of Rowville will be having a busy lead-up to Christmas. Amongst our many projects, we have been out in our Catering Van at the warm-up to the Commonwealth Games event at Rowville on Sunday 20 November. We will be assembling Enviro Mowers and our annual social golf night at Pitch and Putt in Mulgrave on December 13th, then we can sit back and relax for a while over the festive season. Then it all starts up again with our first meeting to be held 24th of January, taking our Foodvan to the Berwick Show late February and then the Great Oppy Bike Ride at the Knox Festival in March.
As you can see, we are an active club and if you want to try something new in 2006, why not join one of the most progressive, leading, All Australian Service/Citizen clubs in your local area. We are always on the lookout for new members, so if you have a few hours a fortnight to spare and want to get involved in your local Apex club, give Adrian, our membership officer, a call on 0419 334 364. We meet at the Stamford hotel, every 2nd and 4th Tuesday night of the month at 7pm for a 7.30 start.
Go to www.apexrowville.org. Click on the many links and see what we are up to, who we are and what we do for our/your local community.
Wishing you all a Happy Christmas and a Safe New Year from all of us at The Apex club of Rowville.

Have you heard of the skin disease called Epidermolysis Bullosa? Well, neither had I until I attended one of our meetings a short time ago and saw a patient with twenty two years of this complaint and listened to a talk by a skin specialist on the subject. I will not discuss the matter further but to say that what this poor man was suffering made my own disability (polio for over eighty years) seem like “a gift”. It sickens me to think that an ordinary family have to spend thousands of dollars every year on bandages and dressings. There are only about a dozen people in Australia with this, so why can’t the Government pay for this out of petty cash?
I have a request to make. If anyone has got, sitting at the back of a drawer any old spectacles that are not used anymore, the Lions Club would be very pleased to receive them for shipment to foreign parts for people who cannot afford to buy them. We would also be pleased to receive used postage stamps, foreign or Australian for fund-raising purposes.
I cannot believe that another year has slipped by since I last said “A Very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year” to all our friends out there in the community who have supported us most generously through the year. The same goes for the staff and management of this paper.

We held our Melbourne Cup week celebration on 4th November. The Hat Parade was magic, with many original forms of headwear from Norma’s flower pot arrangement to Jay’s pink outfit. Not forgetting James Leong’s Jockey Cap original.
The chicken and champagne lunch was enjoyed by all.
Now for the races, with members taking the place of horses. Most were overweight for age or ‘knobbled’, however all finished the course. All in all, a great afternoon. Well done Committee.
Our final activities for the year will be our festive season luncheon on the 9th December which will include a visit from Santa, who will distribute gifts to all members and with entertainment provided by Charlie Griffin. Our weekly activities of bowls, cards and scrabble on Wednesday 14th December and bowls and bingo on Friday 16th December, after which we will close down for the festive holidays and re-open on Wednesday 11th January 2006.
Finally, it is with deep regret that we have to report the death of member and former Club President, Barry Start, who died suddenly on the 5th November. The members express their deepest sympathy to Babs and her family on their tragic loss.

Rowville & District Neighbourhood House
The year 2005 for the Rowville & District Neighbourhood House has been a most successful one. A big thank-you to all members of the community for being participants, hirers and volunteers, who support us to keep your Neighbourhood House functioning and financial. We look forward to contacting all the people who put their name down on our” Expression of Interest” lists at Stringybark to enrol in classes for 2006. If there are any interested members of the community who have had the experience of serving on committees, we would like you to join us. If you could spare one night for two hours each month, you will find it very rewarding.
Our Semester 1 brochure will be available at the Neighbourhood House from 8th December and covers the period 30th January to 16th June 2006. Classes for 2006 will resume in the 1st week of February with new courses: First Aid accredited Training Certificate Level 2, Journalling, Ceramics, Email & Internet classes. Enrolments will be taken for ages 9 – 12 yrs in Penny’s Jazz/Funk group on Wednesdays and Pre -School Music & Movement on Wednesdays 9.30 am -10.15 am. There are many more to choose from so why not join a class and learn a new skill in 2006.
Volunteers needed: The Rowville & District Neighbourhood House runs a volunteer program (proudly supported by the Knox Council) for members of the community who need to update or learn new office skills. This could be a good starting point for school leavers interested in Business or Office Administration. Please phone us on 9764 1166 if you would like to volunteer.
The Committee, Staff and Volunteers of the Neighbourhood House would like to wish everyone a Happy and Safe Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
