Static Problems in Relation to VDUs

This same charge results in dirt accumulation on both the display and the internal parts of the monitor and can cause down time of the equipment.

Description of VDUs and the Radiation Spectrum

VDU's are designed to produce visible radiation, but in the process of producing light they generate several types of electromagnetic radiation as well. Radiation is the emission of energy in the form of waves of particles.

The amount of energy in an electromagnetic wave depends on its frequency. The higher the frequency, the greater the energy. The VDU's electron beam produces X-rays. The activated screen phosphors produce optical light, which includes visible light as well as ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) light. The electrical components that cause the beam to scan produce static electricity and various kinds of radio waves including radio frequency (RF), very low frequency (VLF) and extremely low frequency (ELF) Radiation.

• Hard X-rays, gamma rays and microwaves are not emitted from VDUs.
• Soft X-rays, ultraviolet, visible and infrared light as well as various radio frequencies are emitted by VDUs. The scientific community is generally of the opinion that the level of the emissions is too low to be of danger to the operator.
• Most of the radiation emitted by VDUs occur in the very low (VLF) and extremely low (ELF) frequency range. This non-ionizing radiation is composed of Electric field and magnetic field emissions.
