This society was founded in the 1980s in response to the great need for environmental improvement in the riverine and wetland areas of the Yarra Valley in the council area of Heidelberg, now Banyule.  Our area of activities include Wilson Reserve and adjoining river flat managed by council and the Yarra Flats Park managed by Parks Victoria.  We have also taken great interest in environmental matters further afield. We have always been a hands on organisation, very active in revegetation programs, forcefully lobbying local and state governments about environmental issues, and closely liaising with other groups, particularly the Friends of Wilson Reserve, and the Warringal Conservation Society.

We have transformed the bare degraded paddocks of the Yarra Flats into a beautiful landscape of forest, wetland and grassland. There has been a significant increase in native animals, particularly birds, as a result of these changes. We made similar changes in the meadowlands of Chelsworth Park and Wilson Reserve. This year we are concentrating our efforts in the Yarra Flats Annulus Sanctary, recently greatly enlarged after our determined lobbying.
