The Ringwood Field Naturalists Club Inc.
Apart from those linked directly with the study of natural history,
other skills such as photography, sketching, map-reading, etc., can all find
an outlet in the programme. So, whatever your particular interest may
be, whether it is the enjoyment of our wilderness areas or simply the identification
of birds visiting your own garden, the Ringwood Field Naturalists Club Inc. is
sure to have something to offer you.
The Club has an extensive library of reference books covering a
wide range of natural history subjects and a free borrowing service is available
to members on meeting nights.
Excursions are normally held once a month, usually on the Saturday
or Sunday following the monthly meeting. Venues for excursions are
generally chosen for the purpose of finding and studying a particular group
of native species of flora or fauna. For example, we may visit the
Altona Saltworks in February to see the wading birds before they set off
on their long migration north, or hunt for terrestrial orchids in the early
spring, or ferns in cool, damp gullies in a summer heat-wave. Often,
favourite places are re-visited at different times of the year to observe
and record any changes which occur, or just to explore familiar beauty spots.
When possible, camp-outs are held lasting a whole week-end or longer
to permit travelling further afield and/or undertaking a more thorough investigation
of a particular area, as well as activities not possible on a day's outing,
such as spot-lighting for nocturnal animals.
