An Interview with Tony Sowersby

Q1. Who is your favourite artist?
Tony: This varies from day to day and week to week. I love Edward Monet, the 19th century French painter. I also really like Edward Hopper, an American artist, who died in the 1960's. Of modern Australian artists I like Rick Amor, Jeffrey Smart and many more.

Q2. If you could have 3 wishes what would you wish for?
Tony:
The biggies for the world:-
Rocket

  1. Peace.
  2. An end to Hunger.
  3. A clean enviroment.
For me personally:-
  1. To work as an artist into my old age.
  2. To travel widely.
  3. To get onto paper all the pictures and books I have in my head.
Q3.What is your favourite food?
Tony: I love curry. I also am partial to mushrooms, bananas, jam on toast, sardines and capuccinos.

Q4. What is your favourite colour?
Tony: The blue of the sky and the colour of my daughters hair.

Q5. Who is your favourite Australian childrens writer?
Tony: Probably Alison Lester, I tend to look at childrens illustrated work rather than read novels.

Q6. Besides yourself, who is your favourite illustrator?
Tony: Will Eisner, the American comic artist and writer. The annual awards for comics (their version of the Oscars) are named the Eisner Awards.

Q7. When you were a boy you said that your Dad used to bring home Batman, The Lone Ranger and Tin Tin comics. Who is your favourite out of these three?
Tony: I appreciate Tin Tin and Herge's work more these days after reading them with my children. I haven't seen a Lone Ranger comic for ages. Batman is drawn by many different artists nowadays, but I like the work done by Frank Miller in the 1980's.

Q8. What are your dogs names?
Tony: Rex (aged 7) and Molly (aged 10 months).

Q9. Whats the best thing about living in Seaford?
Tony: I live near the beach. Somedays I walk there and my family and our dogs have the beach to ourselves. In a large city that is amazing, but dont tell anyone please.

Q10. Whats the best thing about being an artist?
Tony: Doing what I love for a living. Seeing the effect my work can have on people. I also enjoy working in public (e.g. Murals) because I can talk and work at the same time. (I could probably talk under water or even wet cement for that matter)
