Club News

We are almost half way through the 2006-2007 Rotary year and President David Robson is well and truly meeting the challenge of the year's motto "Lead the Way" with a full swag of projects in progress.

Several sausage sizzles have been held in the effort to raise money for the Palliative Care Unit of the Werribee Mercy Hospital and a very special event involving a bearded member of the Club is being planned to take place at the Mercy Hospital Community Fete next year.

Following the highly successful 2006 Wyndham Youth Public Speaking Competition, jointly run by the Rotary Club of Hoppers Crossing and the Apex Club of Hoppers Crossing, plans are in progress for a bigger and better 2007 event in May.  Committee Chairperson Des O'Shanassy has strongly urged all local schools to commence their planning and training of students for next year’s competition which is open to senior students and carries a cash prize and trophies plus a Perpetual Trophy to be awarded to the college represented by the winning student.

Rotary Presidents-Elect and their partners from the 70 clubs in Rotary District D9800 attended a half day of training for their year as Presidents in 2007-08 at the Werribee Campus of Victoria University on Sunday, 29 October.  The Rotary Club of Hoppers Crossing was invited to host and organize the Pre-PET (President Elect Training) Seminar.  Club President David Robson and his wife, Denise, are pictured with District Governor-Elect John Davis at the Pre-PET Seminar.

Finally, Club members were delighted to learn that on October 20 Balibar Primary School in Timor Leste was officially opened by the First Lady of Timor Leste, Kirsty Sword Gusmao.  Rotary Club members Charlie Galea, Robin Mills, Frances Farrugia and her partner Norm were particularly delighted to hear this news.  They had formed part of a team who had contributed to construction of the school in May this year.  The Rotary Club of Hoppers Crossing contributed $25,000 to the construction project.
