Three new women members for Rotary Club of Hoppers Crossing

22 October 2008

The membership of the Rotary Club of Hoppers Crossing has been increased by three new members who were inducted by President Bob Fairclough at the Club's regular meeting on Wednesday, 22 October.

The three Rotarians are all women which brings the total membership of the Club to 31 and the number of women to 7, the largest female membership the Club has seen in its 29 year history.  Indeed it was not until a United States Supreme Court decision in California in 1987 that women were permitted to join Rotary International.  The one remaining role that has not been held by a woman so far is Rotary International President.

Perhaps one of the new recruits will break down the final barrier!  Each certainly brings a unique skill set to the Club.

Deize Lima emigrated to Australia 18 months ago with her husband, Luis, and hopes through her Rotary involvement to gain a better understanding of Australian values and traditions.  Her father was a Rotarian in Brazil and Deize is a former Rotary exchange student.  She is a psychologist by profession and looks forward to getting involved in projects that will help the local community. She is also keen to help exchange students coming to Australia from overseas to adjust to their new environs.

Alison Purdy is a financial planner who has already used her skills to assist with fundraising for the Starlight Foundation.  She wants to make stronger connections with the local community through giving and sharing and looks forward to the opportunity to learn from others, especially the guest speakers who visit the Club.

Vicki Williams has been motivated to join by the work she has seen done by Rotarians both within the local community and overseas.  "In my opinion Rotary signifies unconditional giving, and that is really important to me.  To become part of such a dynamic team of amazing people is a bonus," she said.  Along with her husband, Rodney Williams, Vicki runs Coaching by Rovick.  As well as personal life coaching, they have expertise in public speaking and Vicki is really looking forward to joining the organising committee for Wyndham Youth Public Speaking Competition which is a joint project with the Apex Club of Hoppers Crossing.

In welcoming the new members, President Bob Fairclough said that he looked forward to their participation in the Club's activities and remarked that a historic occasion had been marked with the induction of three women members on the same evening.
