Hoppers Crossing resident, Alyssa Stiglich, was among 29 people whose abilities and achievements were celebrated at the Shine On Awards ceremony at Deakin University, Waurn Ponds on Sunday, 1 May. All of the awardees live with a disability and are recognised for not letting their disabilities get in the way of serving others. Alyssa, nominated by the Rotary Club of Hoppers Crossing , has Downs Syndrome, a genetic condition causing delays in physical and mental development. Alyssa has not allowed her disability to impact on making real contributions in life and making a number of personal achievements.
As a child Alyssa was a gymnast and won a gold medal at the Australian Special Olympics Victorian State Games in 1995. During her teenage years she played netball within the YMCA All Abilities Group at Ballan Road. She was awarded "Student of the Year" at Montague Continuing Education Centre in South Melbourne in her final year at the school. She went on to attend Victoria University at Footscray and graduated with a Certificate 1 in Work Education. While attending Montague Continuing Education Centre in 2005, Alyssa helped her mother, Lois Stiglich, to organise a Debutante Ball.
Alyssa volunteers at the Werribee Crossroads Uniting Church, helping with the play group, the Easter and Christmas Workshops, games and craft for primary school children. She is also a passionate member of the Geelong Football Club.
Alyssa provides emotional support and personal care for her older sister, who has a rate genetic condition that limits her physical and cognitive abilities. This ongoing support is invaluable to her family.
Alyssa has been successful in gaining employment locally. She works in the fitting rooms at Kmart one day a week and at Hair Phase at Hogan's Corner on two other days.
As well as the award of a certificate of commendation, Alyssa was also presented with a trophy for the most outstanding nominee in the 15-25 year old age group.
