Some of our Projects:

Rotary Liver-Cell Bank: Since early 2000 the Rotary Club of Footscray, in conjunction with other Rotary clubs, has assisted with purchase of research equipment for the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute's project to eliminate liver transplants by infusing healthy cells which rebuild diseased livers.  Clinical trials are proceeding in this important state-of-the-art field. Over $300,000 has so-far been raised.  The first procedure was carried out in December 2004.

Installation of Water Tanks in Developing Countries: Since 1990, our member Peter McGrath, with assistance of other  members, has performed voluntary work in PNG, Western Samoa, Kiribati , East Timor etc. They have constructed many schools and in recent years have been installing water tanks and associated plumbing in these areas.

Assistance to East Timor: Our member Daryl Mills left for East Timor on 5 December 2003 for a multi-year stint as Co-ordinator for Southern Region Rotary Assistance to East Timor. He has subsequently transferred to the Rotary Club of Dili where he continues the vital work of Rotary assistance to the fledgling nation.

Financial Assistance to Local Charities: Substantial funds have been provided annually to many recognised local charitable institutions from our Club's Community Service Trust.  

Exchange Students: Footscray Rotary has been involved with Rotary's Exchange Student program since 1965 and has sent and received over 40 students for a year's study in various countries - an important contribution to World Understanding and Peace.

In 2003 we hosted 18 year old Adriane Tartare from Florianopolis (Brazil). Evan Clarence from Hoppers Crossing returned in January 2004 after a year's exchange in Brazil. 16 year-old Bartek Glogowski returned to Poland in July 2005 after a one-year stay with us. Ella Hewitt from Newport returned home in January 2006 after a one year exchange with the Rotary Club of Saskobing on one of the southern islands of Denmark. Marten Trenktrog (17) returned to Germany in July 2006 after staying with us for a year.  Ailsa Webb arrived back in January 2006 after a year's stay in Finland. Poya Chegeni from Sweden and Laura Quintard from France joined us in July 2006 for a year's stay. Ellie Everist returned in January 2008 after a year in Germany.  Jade Williams arrived back from Poland in January 2009. Jonas Vraengmose returned to Denmark in July 2008. Natalia Sabat came to us from Brazil in January 2009. Louise  Dreuillet from France  in July 2009.

Doug Mills Memorial Scholarship: A two-year scholarship of $1,000 per year awarded to a year 10 VCE Student who will have difficulty competing their 11 & 12 years due to financial constraints. In memory of our revered first member of our club to attain the position of District Governor (1981-82). Doug, who was Director of the Footscray Institute of Technology (now Victoria University) joined our club in 1970 and was President in 1975-76. He died suddenly in 1985.

Doug Mills Vocational Service Award:  Recommended to the Board by the Vocational Service Chairman - available to Rotarians and Non-Rotarians. Vocational Service is the Avenue of Service dealing in the pride of our profession and performing it in an honourable manner. It is our responsibility to make business and industry a better place to work, improving the quality of  life in the professions, trade, industry and commerce.

Lawrence & Margaret Atley Music Scholarship:  Awarded to a promising music student who is up to 16 years of age to further the student’s music studies. $1,000 plus a framed certificate. This scholarship honours Lawrence Atley and wife Margaret. Lawrence (inducted to our club in 1972) has been one of our foremost members. He was our club’s second District Governor (1989-90), has held every club office, has represented three world Presidents at District Conferences in Australia and overseas. He has chaired many important Rotary District committees and given distinguished service to Rotary and our community over several decades. He holds triple PHF status and Rotary’s prestigious Distinguished Service Award (1997). Margaret (PHF), an honorary member of our club has always been an indispensible help to Lawrence and our club.

John H Kerr Community Service Award: In memory of John H Kerr who inaugurated these awards in 1976. A task that needs doing in the community and getting it done is a challenge met daily by many dedicated community members, usually with no reward except the satisfaction of helping their fellow citizens. Our club has so-far recognised over 200 of our selfless people who have contributed significantly to the social fabric of our community.

BookStart: Our club has co-operated with the Maribyrnong City Council to establish our BookStart Program, which provides every baby resident in our municipality with books and other materials designed to promote a love of reading and a high level of literacy. A program with the potential for life-long benefits for the children and their parents.

A River for Everyone: The Maribyrnong River is a marvellous, but somewhat under-utilised asset. In conjunction with other Rotary clubs in our area we are creating a walking path along the river bank from Keilor to Docklands, with a metre-high stainless steel bollard every 500 metres along the path. The bollards will be numbered and will provide reference points for emergency services and information for passers-by.

HOW TO HAVE FUN WITH US AND HELP OUR PROGRAMS

It WAS "A Great Night at the Trots"....Our annual Jimmy Hunt Trots Night was held at MOONEE VALLEY in March 2009. Many thanks to the 120 people whose presence made it truly a 'Night to Remember".

Voluntary Dental Treatment in Developing Countries: Annually since 1983 our member Dr Jamie Robertson has lead a team of dentists and support staff to Philippines, Tibet, India and Vietnam to provide dental; services to people whose

Problems would have been untreated without their intervention. The project has concentrated on Vietnam since 1991.
