Home from Vietnam December 1972. (Expanded image is 138KB) I found the photo above (press on it to make it bigger) in a book by George Odgers, titled "Pictorial History of the Royal Australian Air Force". Why the picture is important to me is that the guy pictured wearing the Beret is Buddha Winch. |

Australian Army Training Team - Vietnam

HQ AATTV near Baria, South Vietnam

Theatre in Baria near Vung Tau, complete with shell and bullet holes. Warren Whittle provided the following information about the above Theatre.
"3 RAR did a cordon & search at Baria during the 1969 Tet, and came under fire from the picture theatre.
The picture theatre was later found to be an aid station with miles of tunnels under it.
They later pulled about 300 - 400 tonnes of rice out of there.
3 RAR went back in to Baria in March and blew up the local brothel and barber shop with M79s, using HE rounds.
Did a similar job on the brothel at Hoa Long, just out of Nui Dat, about the same time."

Entrance to the Free World Building

Headquarters for the Australian Army Assistance Group (HQAAAGV) was at
the Free World Building in Saigon. The above picture shows the entrance into
the Free World compound.

Gennie Jocky Heaven - Generator complex at the Free World Building. Dual 62.5 KVA
Diesel Generators powered the all important Communications Complex
- our rear link back to Australia.

Helipads located at the rear of the Free World complex in Saigon.
Korean Barracks - Free World Complex

Barracks area within the Free World Building that housed the Korean Military.
These Korean soldiers looked the meanest mother-******s I ever saw in the
military forces represented in Vietnam.

Typical Rubber Plantation on Highway 1 located about 20-30 Km outside of Saigon. We spent a bit
of time in this particular Plantation when Pte Mick Kenney of G & E Platoon crashed the 10 tonne truck
into the plantation. On RTU I was pleased to see on the daily SITREP, that the plantation Grid Reference
was highlighted as a suspected V.C. Hamlet!!!!!

Downtown Saigon - picture taken on top of the Vin Loi BEQ looking toward the Saigon River.
Tu Do Street is located in the jumble to the left of the picture.
Saigon traffic along Tran Quoc Tran

Taken from the front of a Yank Tank, the Saigon Traffic was certainly busy after Curfew.
