WELCOME

We bid a warm welcome to some new members! Sisters Kate and Maya Reid live in a small town near Cairns, in Far North Queensland, Each sails her own dinghy, which are appropriately called 'Swallow' and 'Amazon'. We also welcome Prof. Richard Snedden, of Malvern, Victoria.

VALE

John Giddy. 10/08/36 - 27/05/09

John passed away peacefully at Freemason's hospital during the evening of the 27th after a long battle with cancer. He gave outstanding service to this society as its Treasurer, who did 'battle' with the Trustees to get a better financial deal for AusTARS. Also as the Webmaster who created this website, and the man who brought colour printing to 'Furthest South'. To do this, John bought a colour laser printer out of his own pocket and a laptop computer to drive it. These he generously bequeathed to AusTARS, along with spare toner cartridges and other spares. As a gesture of gratitude, AusTARS awarded John Honorary Life Membership, even though we knew at the time that he would not be able to enjoy this for long. There were many occasions when John 'pulled my chestnuts from the fire' before they became public knowledege, for which I am deeply grateful. As recently as three weeks before his death he was still advising me (the apprentice webmaster) on managing certain aspects of the HTML code which is behind every website. I shall miss his wisdom very much. I would also like to thank David Giddy for providing the excellent photograph of John.

David.

AusTARS Tenth Anniversary!

Yes, it's true! AusTARS have been meeting for ten years this year. which calls for a celebration! What better way to celebrate than by mounting a year packed with fun Ransome-related outdoor activities. How are your preparations progressing? Australia and New Zealand have the world's best climate for year-round outdoor activities. Let's make the most of it! As is mentioned a few lines further down, Jan will assist with ideas for activities for those members outside of Victoria.

Some new changes.

Furthest South is having a change of editorship! From 2009, Courtney Lick, a WaraTAR, will be editing our newsletter, with some input from Jan Allen. It is great to see a young member taking on a job for the Society, and we are most grateful to Courtney.

Articles for the third issue of our newsletter in 2009 are being sought now. The newsletter depends on YOU! Have you a tale of adventure, been to the UK on the AR trail, or could provide a short profile of yourself? If so, please send your article in a Word document by eel-mail to Courtney or at 79 Railway Parade, Bundanoon, N.S.W., 2578.

Jan Allen will continue to organise our AusTARS events but welcomes any help with this, if anyone would like to be involved with the planning
