About Us

The Queenscliffe Neighbourhood House was started by a small group of enthusiastic local residents in 1985. Our home until 1995 was “Warraine”, a house owned by the Presbyterian Church in Gellibrand Street. Ten years of stability enabled the "House" to establish within the community and develop a range of programs and services appropriate to community needs and interests. The “House” moved twice in the following two years. Since July 1997, the Queenscliffe Neighbourhood House has been based at the former Maternal and Child Health building at 33 King St. This has been a time of considerable expansion of the program and services offered to the community. For some time we have been seeking a larger more permanent home more suitable for our current activities.

As of April 2010 we now have a new home at 3 Tobin Drive Queenscliff, just before the Pilot Station Jetty - kindly made available to us by the Borough of Queenscliffe. This larger building, with fantastic views, will provide us with more room to provide exciting new programs and classes for the community. It also gives us ample space to bring some of our previously run outside activities back in 'house' (like an artist-in-residence), and loads more community meeting space.

Keep an eye on the Term Flyer for new activities at our new Neighbourhood House!

The Queenscliffe Neighbourhood House receives funding from a range of sources. The State Government Department of Planning and Community Development make a contribution towards the Co-ordinator’s salary and some on- costs. The Borough of Queenscliffe provides the venue and its maintenance. Each year the Co-ordinator applies for funding under council’s Community Development and Arts and Community Development Grants Programs for specific items or projects. The Neighbourhood House also receives funds from ACFE (Adult Community and Further Education) to run Computer classes. This funding and other project funds are applied for on an annual basis. The Committee of Management are involved in fundraising activities for specific projects and to ensure the financial viability of the organization.

Management

As a community managed service the Neighbourhood House is governed by a Committee of Management elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting. These eleven volunteers reflect the diversity of people in the community and have a range of skills which they utilise to support the management of the Neighbourhood House. These include a President, Treasurer and Vice Treasurer. The Committee ensures good governance practices, is financially responsible and accountable and meets all financial and legal requirements. The Neighbourhood House is legally incorporated under the Victorian Associations Incorporations Act with the annual general meeting held in the month of October. The Neighbourhood House has one paid worker, the Coordinator, who provides 23 hours of community development/coordination per week.
