Ken Richardson

I have been turning for a little over 13 years and started off with a home built lathe. This served me well for seven years although a number of modifications left little of the original machine. Presently I have a Woodfast C1000 which allows me to work with larger and heavier pieces.

This lidded container ( 240 mmW x 175mm H ) is crafted from a variety of materials. The body is Camphor Laurel ( from Cooroy, Queensland ), the lid is Beefwood ( from Lightning Ridge, N.S.W.), the finial is crafted from Huon Pine ( Strahan, Tasmania ) and Gidgee (Bourke N.S. W. ) The inlay in the lid is Spangled Emperor fish leather.

1 make a number of lidded containers of all sizes.
This one uses Tasmanian Myrtle and Jarrah ( 150 mm W x 140 mm H )

Laminated bowl ( 310 mm W x 50 mm H )
Much of the timber used in this piece started life as floorboards! It is crafted entirely from Australian timbers and is set out in a symmetrical form left to right of the centre of the bowl. Every piece of timber is finished using a buzzer to obtain perfect joints. Note the textured and blackened rim. I have found it advisable to use a high quality yellow glue to prevent creep.

This  bowl ( 140 W x 65 ) H ) is made from Tasmanian Leatherwood timber which turns very well & finishes beautifully. It often shows outstanding figure, but is hard to find in larger sizes.

I have always had a fascination with Kaleidoscopes and over the years I have made quite a number of different types and styles.

This uses Huon Pine and Blackheart Sassafras (both Tasmanian timbers) The two discs are slumped glass and are turned using a thumb on a brass knob fitted in the eyepiece. Overall size is 320 mm L x 130 mm W x 140 mm H.

This kaleidoscope is unusual in that the object cell can be removed and replaced by another, The front rim unscrews, the cell can be changed and the rim screwed back on. Two additional cells rest in cups on the base. Crafted from Huon Pine and Tiger Myrtle, both Tasmanian timbers, this unit measures 300 mm L x 125 mm W x 135 mm H.

A wheel type kaleidoscope made in Huon Pine and Blackheart Sassafras. The wheels are resin discs with embedded gemstones.

This is an unusual design wheel type kaleidoscope  in which the viewing object is revolved by a small electric motor. It uses Huon Pine , Blackheart Sassafras and brass tubing. It is 280 mm L x 180 mm W x 335 mm H.
The object has wild flowers embedded in resin.
