After serving an apprenticeship, he had his own plumbing business until 1976 when he started a light engineering business that specialised in cutting and threading pipes and rods. He retired from this business in 1995.
He joined the Peninsula Woodturners Guild in 1992 but only started to become proficient after retirement and he became more involved in the hobby. Last year he branched out into Intarsia and Pyrography which also give him much pleasure.
Since 1990, Betty and he have caravanned around Australia extensively and he has made many friends amongst woodturners and Freemasons - he has been a practising member since 1957.
