THE KYNETON EXPERIENCE

Members of the Guild helping sick children

On 23rd September 2002 under the leadership of President Bill Beal some 10 members of the Guild laden with toys and tools sallied forth to Campaspe Downs near Kyneton to join in the activities with some 175 children plus their helpers in the Annual Spring Challenge Camp for “Kids with Cancer”
This was our second year at the camp and after a welcoming cuppa by Mary (Andrew’s minder from last year) we set up our workplace with 5 lathes and an assortment of other machine tools.
The chips and shavings were soon flying as many different small items took shape. This year we were well provisioned with toys to hand out thanks to the generosity of several members who made a range of dolls, cars, tops, flying propellers, jigsaw puzzles, knitting nancies, baseball bats, aeroplanes and many more were distributed to the children who eagerly sought out our location.

Great interest was created in how the various items were made and the children with their carers were keen to watch and ask questions as work progressed.   Many of the toys were embellished by the children as they attended the painting and art groups which were operating nearby our setup. A wide range of activities were available for all to participate in over the 5 day camp which included Trampoling, Motor Bike Rides, Hovercraft Rides, Sailing, Canoeing, Swimming, Computer Games and many more physical activities    Accommodation and meals were great and we were well cared for by the camp organizers.
Some 475 toys were distributed along with 80 or so gifts to the carers thanks to the support given by many members of the Guild, you can be justly proud of the achievement.

So popular with the Kids is our involvement that the Challenge group have invited us to return in 2003 for their next Spring Camp.
