window

Every program in MS Windows™ (95, 98..) runs in a window. A window is a kind of frame that lets you control the program.

close

close this button will close your program, or close the file you are working on.

minimise

shrink this button will "shrink" your window to the bottom of the screen. It's still open, just hidden.

maximise

fill this button makes your window "fill" the screen. This gives you more room for working.

toolbar

If you like using the mouse, the toolbar lets you do things quicker. Most programs have at least one toolbar. Some programs (eg MS Word) have many.

menu bar

Every program has a menu bar. This is how you tell it what to do.

The File menu usually has commands like Open, Save, Print, and Exit. The Edit menu usually has Cut, Copy, Paste and Select All.

When you ask the machine to Save your work, or Open a file you saved earlier, or Print a file, you will find a dialogue box on the screen, asking for more information.

cursor

When you move the mouse around the screen, what you see on the screen is called the cursor. It can be a flashing vertical line (insertion point), an arrow , a hand, a double-headed arrow re-size a frame or window, or even a four-headed arrow move a frame or picture.

Watch how it changes, because you can do different things with the mouse, depending on its form. For example, an hourglass cursor usually means you must wait wait.

scroll bar

vertical scroll Use the scroll bar to move the screen page up and down.

Either click on the small black triangles, or drag the elevator button up and down.
