A Dangerous Environment

Many Australian beaches are dangerous and have strong currents, called rips. A swimmer caught in a rip can be dragged far out to sea and will drown unless someone rescues them.

The Europeans who colonised Australia during the last 200 years came from cold climates. Most of them could not swim. The warm climate of Australia soon changed that.
