Information and Resources for Victorians affected by HIV/AIDS now available on the Internet

A first for Victoria.

A group of volunteers today announced the establishment of a web site "Positive People Victoria".

In a first for Victoria, a web site is now on line which aims to offer a comprehensive reference directory of services and resources for people living with HIV/AIDS, their partners, families, friends and carers. The site also offers news and an opportunity for discussion of issues relevant to positive people.

The Positive People Victoria site can be found at http://www.vicnet.net.au/~positive/

The Ideal Hospital Document
A charter of the minimum requirements for in and outpatient care for people living with HIV/AIDS prepared by PLWHA (Victoria). The document was included in the tender brief for HIV/AIDS and Infectious Diseases Services following the closure of Fairfield. It remains useful as a benchmark to measure service quality and accountability.
Positive Victorians Contributing to the Global Response to HIV/AIDS.
A number of positive Victorian men and women are currently involved in the global response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. This page intends to keep readers up to date with what's happening internationally.

We encourage contributions of new information that will ensure the site is relevant, accurate and current. We are particularly conscious of the needs of people living beyond the metropolitan area and seek relevant input. We would also welcome assistance from people affected by HIV/AIDS in the further development and maintenance of the site.

Until now, community media has offered few opportunities for people affected by HIV/AIDS to be informed about or to participate in the debate on important issues such as the closure of Fairfield, the co-location of the Positive Living Centre with the proposed new Victorian AIDS Council building, and the creation of an independent PLWHA organisation. Depending on resources, Positive People Victoria hopes to develop and accept contributions to a printed newssheet complementing the internet site. This will facilitate, for the first time in community media, open debate and discussion.

Contributor Susan Paxton said "This is the most exciting development in information provision to PLWHAs. For years we have been clamouring for a positive people's peer support vehicle for communication. Now we have something which can expand continually - and, hopefully, it will soon become interactive. Once again, positive people are doing it for themselves with little resources."

Access to appropriate information is an essential factor in self-managing and living with HIV/AIDS. Without such access, it is very difficult for people to make informed choices.

Positive People Victoria is committed to providing this access.

Positive People Victoria is a volunteer-based community group, offering access to information and resources to people living with HIV/AIDS, their partner(s), families, friends and carers.
