A GP Referral Guide is maintained by the HIV GP Education Program.

The Referral Guide lists GPs who have participated in an HIV/AIDS Education Course. The Guide is intended for health workers and others involved in the care of people with HIV/AIDS who wish to locate doctors with an interest in and specialised knowledge of treatments and associated issues.

The guide lists GPs by location. For further easy reference the guide includes an index which lists GPs by last name.

Doctors who are identified with a (P) have completed a prescriber course conducted by the HIV GP Education Program and are able to prescribe Section 100 drugs in the treatment of HIV/AIDS. Doctors not identified (P) completed an introductory course on HIV/AIDS before May 1996. (since May 1996, the Program has run a combined introductory/prescriber course which enables participants to become prescribers of these Section 100 drugs.

The HIV GP Education Program provides education on HIV/AIDS to GPs in Victoria. The Program is funded by the Victorian Department of Human Services. Since July 1996, the Program has been part of the Southern Health Care Network, staffed by two part time workers. The Program also conducts update evenings on relevant topics, publishes a newsletter "VirEd" (which also deals with Hepatitis C), maintains an Internet presence, produces the Referral Guide and acts as a resource for GPs on HIV issues.
