Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS)

http://www.rdns.asn.au

Care provided in the home by experienced District Nurses, supported by a specialist HIV/AIDS team. Provides care and support to people with HIV/AIDS in the Melbourne Metropolitan area and the Mornington Peninsula.

Referral

Anyone can ask for RDNS services, the client, a family member or carer, local doctor, hospital or other service provider.

Services Available

RDNS does not just provide nursing care. Many people with HIV/AIDS have to manage quite complex treatments regimes, involving many different drugs. RDNS can help with this, organising medications into dosette boxes and the like.

health monitoring and advice
general nursing care
assistance with medications
some complex treatments available in the home (intravenous treatments, pain management)
care for those who choose to die at home
emotional support/support for carers
after hours telephone support service (03) 9 379 0577

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is highly regarded by RDNS and maintained at all times. No aspect of care is discussed without prior consultation and consent.

Integration with Other Services

Where appropriate and with consent, care may be co-ordinated with other health and community service providers, volunteer and support groups( e.g. Victorian AIDS Council Support Program, or AIDS Care Association).

Charges

State Government requires RDNS to charge a nominal fee for services. However, care will not be denied due to inability to pay.

Education

Health education can be provided in the home by the district nurse.

Carers Workshops are held throughout the year at the RDNS Education Department. These workshops provide practical information, advice and support, and take into consideration the individual needs of carers. Topics may include: safe lifting techniques, care of the carer, infection control etc...
