Gable crashes onto Bay Street

On Sunday afternoon, 21st Oct 2007, a very hot Melbourne day, patrons from The Rose were drawn onto the street by the sound of crashing bricks and masonary. The Flemish Gable on top of Rene's Dry Cleaning at 301 Bay Street had fallen onto the ground below. Luckily no-one appears to have been on the footpath at the time.

A group of men from Chequers, with beers in hand, watched from across the road as Victoria Police and the State Emergency Service blocked the area.

303 World Travel, next door, was considered an immediate threat to life and limb so later that night the entire road was blocked and it's parapet was removed using a controlled drop.

The footpath remained blocked through Monday while the bricks were removed and the remaining buildings are considered safe for the short term. It is likely that Port Phillip Council will require the structures be reinstated.

PMHPS member, David Thompson, was passing through with his camera and snapped this shot while 303 still had it's head.
