BICYCLE ROADS (bicycle PATH is a euphemism - bicycles are vehicles):
The associated paving, lighting, signage, loss and harm to highly valued coastal vegetation, and introduction of large numbers of machines (the bicycles), which have dangerous momentum and energy in motion, and add clutter when parked, do produce significant conflicts with pedestrians and coastal values.

The Kennett Government’s “Bay Trail” was decreed by the then Conservation Minister, Hon. Mark Birrell MLC, as a “shared” bicycle and pedestrian “trail” around Port Phillip Bay, with the building of sections of it starting without any overall plan of exactly where the whole “trail” would be sited. Although many isolated sections have been built, the location of other sections has not been settled as at 2010.

 

Sections without a definite location being yet determined include parts of Frankston, Kingston and Bayside municipalities, as below.

KINGSTON CITY COUNCIL FORESHORE BICYCLE ROAD:

Member for Mordialloc's speech in the Legislative Assembly on Kingston's proposed foreshore bicycle road on 17th April 2007 reveals 61% support for a roadside route.

Bitumen width on Beach Road EAST of Cromer Rd, Beaumaris, is over 1 metre wider than it is to its WEST, allowing at least 1 m of bicycle road width to come from it.

Kingston Plan to Bisect Foreshore for Bicycle Road: PPCC Inc. September 2005 letter asks Kingston Council to route its bicycle road at edge of Beach Rd road reserve.

PPCC Inc. February 2005 letter to Kingston City Council asks that route of a proposed foreshore bicycle road be, as in Bayside, on edge of Beach Rd, not bisecting the Reserve.

Bicycle Road at Bayside City Council's Brighton Baths had the dubious distinction of winning Category 06 Public Domain Award 2003 (open .PDF file) of Cement and Concrete Association of Australia, along with much other deposition of concrete in municipal reserves.
