The Point Ormond knoll,
remnant of a high red bluff removed by the Thomas Bent
Government, in the1800s, to make the Brighton railway embankment. Sir Henry Bolte's Liberal Government legislated to let a commercial
restaurant be built on the knoll. A joint campaign by Port Phillip Conservation Council Inc, and the National Trust of Australia
(Victoria), with the Federated Furnishing Trade Society of Australasia
banning window installation in the
restaurant, convinced Sir Rupert
Hamer's Liberal Government to repeal that bad legislation, by
means of the St Kilda (Ormond Restaurant) Land Act 1973. ELWOOD |
