Feedback: 2002

  • 19-Nov-02 Kim (a descendant of Susannah Gribble (2nd child of William and Susannah Gribble generation 4 under tree) who apparently married a Trescowthick and moved to Australia) said 'hi'. Ed: - wow, another link to an early Illogan Gribble family.

  • 13-Oct-02 Len telephoned to provide some details re the Gribble farm harvest photo under 'More Data'. Recently reading the diaries of his grandfather (William Gribble and Edith Cornish generation 6 under tree) he came across the same photo near an entry recording a visit to Victoria from Western Australia by Stan Gribble. The rear of the photo identified Stan as on the first harvester and the little boy as his brother Reg. Ed: Fantastic! Was obviously a significant photo to have been so distributed.

  • 17-Aug-02 John & Pam provided feedback on the commemorative event (150 year anniversary of Simon Gribble's arrival in Victoria) proposed for Melbourne in 2004. They liked the idea but felt it needed to be done well. Ed: Agreed. The reunion attended by Simon and Jerry in California mid 2002 which was held at a Holiday Inn seems a good example of what is possible.

  • 31-Jul-02 Bill of Wisconsin (who's ancestor came to Wisconsin in 1837 is a descendant of Richard Gribble who married Mary Hoskins cir 1798 Illogan). Found the website very interesting. Ed: It would be wonderful if these descendants of early Illogan Gribbles were able to shed additional light on Gribble Illogan history.

  • 9-Jun-02 Nola of Merredin who is creating for the local library a database of the town's cemeteries passed on some details re missing dates in the family tree. Ed: much appreciated.

  • 28-Feb-02 Sandy wrote: 'What a nice site you've designed!' Ed: Actually my daughter Clemmie, an IT student at Swinburne University, designed it but she didn't want to broadcast the fact!!! Thanks for the opportunity to give credit where it's really due.

  • Mike again.Re. your comment:"If Illogan has displays highlighting its mining past we did not see them..." is easily explained. If you look at the 19th Century houses around here you'll notice that most are quite large. Illogan grew popular because the mines weren't here; the poorer folk lived amid the mine workings but those who could afford it moved out to places like Illogan. The exception, of course is the Churchtown area you saw, much of which pre-dates the mining boom. Ed: I am not sure this is wholly correct. For example, The West Briton of Thursday July 5 1990 reproduced an underground photo taken in January 1898 of a man drilling at the 320 fathom level in The Wheal Agar Mine at Illogan.

  • 24-Feb-02 Mike wrote: 'Your spelling Ventanraze should be Ventonraze. Earlier spellings were Fentenras (1327) and Fyntenras (1389). The Cornish word Fenten or Venton means "well"; the ras/raze bit is less certain - perhaps from the same root as the Welsh rhad meaning "blessing" or "favour". That would make the meaning something like "well of blessing", suggesting a holy well.

  • 16-Feb-02 Robin phoned to say: 'wonderful to see someone else is interested in the family tree. Thinks Alfred delivered by Aunt Hutton. (who trained at Geraldton for the Boer war. She also worked at the Fremantle lunatic asylum now a museum). Marj was sent off to Miss Parnells Girls High School after being discovered swinging from the 2nd floor hotel balconey. Frank and his sister Esther & her husband Tom Duff owned the Merredin Hotel. Tom went away to the Boer War during which time Hilda came to work at the hotel as a laundress and ended up marrying Frank. On Tom's return Frank and Hilda left for the goldfields at Westonia."
