Fifth Generation

  1. William Gribble m. Mary Ann Uren, Illogan 31 Jan 1824

William, miner b. cir 1799, bapt: 21 Apr 1799, d. Ilogan 7 Apr 1862 aged 63. Little is known by me about William but Bawden noted in his transcript concerning the marriage register "he signed Gribbell". Interesting both for the spelling and as most men doing the same at this time simply made a mark. Perhaps he had been a student at the Illogan Churchtown charity school mentioned by Janet Thomas?

William has a fine memorial in the St Illogan churchyard sacred to his memory and that of his children Charles, Elizabeth, and Mary. It's my belief his wife and resident son erected this memorial just prior to their departure for Australia in 1863. We should be so lucky! As well as taking photos Janette and I made a "rubbing" of this memorial when visiting in April 2001.

Mary Ann, b.1800 (daughter of William Uren, miner and Mary Uren (maiden name Bennetts)). d. 1889 Northcote Melbourne Australia. At the time of her death Mary was living with her son Simon and his family in Northcote where Simon and son William had set up as blacksmiths.
