Fourth Generation

  1. William Gribble m. Susanna Retallick, Illogan 18 Oct 1794

William, miner b. 1774?, bapt: 24 Jul 1774?, d. Churchtown Illogan 1827 aged 54*. Susanna, b. cir 1774 (daughter of Charles and Wilmot Retallack. Sisters named Mary Ann, Sarah, and Christian. Brothers named Charles, and Simon). bapt. ?, d. 1823 Churchtown Illogan aged 49. Buried the same day (28 Apr) as her young 16 years old daughter Elizabeth.

While the recorded age at death suggests a birth date close to that of Beniamine's William the absence for this William of children named Jane, Catherine, Benjamin, and Jeneffer is a concern.

Until Nov 2001 when I came across the age at death figure for William my inclination was to infer Joseph bapt 14 Jul 1728 as the father. But even here all was not without doubt. Now the missing family names among the children were Benjamin and Jane. A positive for Joseph is that he died young in 1770 which would explain William's identification with the Retallack family as evidenced through his children's naming.

The bottom line is that the parental link remains speculative!

Investigations over 2003 of Camborne transcripts and the IGI have not revealed any additional likely candidates for the parents of this William. Although Bawden's transcribed date at death is an anomaly my belief is firming that the likely parents of William were in fact Joseph and Anne Weekes who married on 7th July 1755. Their children were Anne, Joseph, William bap 1 Feb 1761, Benjamin, and Jane. Joseph was buried in 1770. The late age at marriage of William (33?) and his brother Joseph (31?) may have resulted from a decision to support the family on the early death of the father. If this William's death or marriage to someone else can be established then this option would be quickly ruled out. So far I have failed in this respect so the absence of such evidence is a kind of negative confirmation. Doubters with contrary evidence or argument most welcome!

    * Bawden notes in his transcript of the Illogan Parish Registers that "the age is altered". Examination of the original is needed to ascertain the nature of the alteration as it may help to confirm the assumption concerning William's parentage.
