PETERHOUSE NOSTALGIA

... MEMORIES ...

Les (Chippy) and Mavis Haworth

Les Haworth (1920 - 1987) who was born in Lancashire England in 1920, commenced working at Peterhouse during the construction of the school and upon the opening of the school he assumed the role of Woodwork Master as well as Property Maintenance - ie. Any problems…. Ring Les!

His late wife Mavis (1921 - 1992) worked in the laundry alongside Ann Butterworth until 1969 when Les was offered and took up the role of Head of Department of Woodwork and Technical Drawing at Umtali Boys High School. Les left behind not only the legacy of a woodworking department where anything from pencil cases to ocean going yachts were built to perfection, but many students also learnt the covert art of home brew and many a 'toyes' room had demi-johns of amber liquid peacefully fermenting behind locker doors! (just ask Ivor Phillips)

In 1981 Les and Mavis emigrated from Zimbabwe and retired to Flame Lily Retirement Home in Natal. Les passed away in May 1986 and Mavis in October 1992. Les and Mavis' daughters Susan and Pamela have also left Zimbabwe's borders, Susan studied at Greys Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, earning honours degrees in Midwifery and Psychiatric Nursing and at present is retired and eagerly awaiting her first grandchild in May. Pamela (The first baby ever christened in the chapel!)sought greener pastures further abroad and has been happily settled in Brisbane since 1984. She is married to an engineer and has managed their business since 1986. Her poetry has been published on the RWW web site and Zimbabwesituation web site and she has a teenage daughter and son.
