PETERHOUSE
NOSTALGIA![]()
This season proved to be another successful one for our athletics programme - both at Interhouse and Interschools level.
The Interhouse events were keenly contested with Sable being the most successful in all three events held. Eleven records were broken at the Interhouse Individual Meeting with Merran Dobb breaking the 100m, 200m and 400m records. Eunice Musvasva jumped 5,35m in long jump and Barbara Yff ran a 2:37 in the 800m.
In the Individual competition Angela Gata won the Junior Victrix Laudorum with Tatenda Mutendadzamera her runner up. E. Musvasva won the Senior Victrix Laudorum with Merran Dobb the runner up. Merran also won the Hurdles Trophy. Unfortunately the Pentathlon did not take place this year.
On the Interschools scene the team did particularly well winning the three meetings competed in by wide margins - from Chisipite and Arundel. We hosted a newly introduced Local School Girls Meeting - the first to be held at PHG.
The Mashonaland East Meeting saw a large contingent of girls taking part. They achieved 25 Ist places and 7 2nd places in the initial Zonal Meeting. After some confusion the U16 and U20 age groups finally participated at Chivhu - the winners from the meeting representing Mashonaland East at the Interprovincial held at the NSS. E Musvasva, P Mitchell, M Chanakira and M Dobb represented the U20 age group, while D Sanhanga, A Gata, L Ngwerume and P Makaya represented the U16's.
Eunice and Barbara also represented Mashonaland East at the Interprovincials in the second term winning two golds and a silver medal, respectively, for Long and Triple Jump and 400m Hurdles.
Although the athletes compete largely as individuals, it is the combined effort that brings the success and unity to the team as a whole.
My grateful thanks go to our 1996 captain, Eunice, and her event captains, Roeina Patel, Paula Mitchell and Barbara Yff for a job well done. Thanks must also go to the staff who assisted with the training and officiating at the meetings.

Squash has been well supported this year. The girls A team have been very successful, winning their league in the Interschool matches. League Squash has continued to be popular and the girls have played enthusiastically and have fared well.
Results for MESRA League:
Senior Section Winner: Kim Taylor Runner Up: Brenda Cartwright
Junior Section Winner: Suzie Malzer Runner Up: Karyn Steynberg
A special mention must go to Alan Mitten for helping to coach the squash girls. They have appreciated the time and effort he has put in improving their squash game.
Thanks must also go to Katie Drake who has been an effective Squash Captain and I have appreciated her enthusiasm and invaluable help. I wish next years' girls the best of luck!

The first term was off to a good start with Mrs Bone as our coach. In the first gala we managed to obtain a second place behind the Dominican Convent. The next two galas, which went very well, were both at Mutare. We again managed to get a very good position within the top five of the Harare schools, which meant that we qualified to go to Bulawayo for the final gala. The team swam brilliantly and we landed a sixth place comfortably, putting us in the top six schools in the country.
Our team was back with a vengeance at the start of the third term, vigorously prompted along by Mrs Vandoros. The long and hard hours of training definitely paid off as shown in our first gala where we secured a comfortable first place. Our success did not end there but rose to greater heights when we gave the Harare schools stiff competition. In the remaining three galas we managed to secure a third and two fourth places.
Many thanks for the enthusiastic support from Mrs Vandoros and Mrs Bond. Well done to a superb team.

I took over the First Team from Mrs Bond in the First Term this year. The majority of the group were back from 1995 and had played together previously.
The First Team saw a number of matches washed out resulting in very little tennis being played. The team won both matches against Eaglesvale and Watershed.
The Third Team proved better in terms of matches played. We had a total of seven matches - losing two to strong Convent and Arundel teams. The girls, however, turned the tables on Arundel and beat them 5-3 in an exciting match. (Short sets played.) They also had a good win over Lomagundi College. Well done to the girls on their determination.
The Senior Singles title was won by Janet Williams, beating Kai Linnell in the final. The Doubles title was won by Janet Williams and Kim Taylor, over an U16 couple - Debbie Holman and Keith-Ann Taylor.
The team has been ably led by S Mellon with J Williams, K Taylor, S Olivey, K Linnell, E Musvasva, B Candy and S Thompson being regular members.
Well done to the girls on a good year of tennis.
