Jon
Trafford joined the staff at Peterhouse in January 1985 after schooling
at Oriel Boys in Harare ('72-'76) and Michaelhouse, Natal ('77-'78), followed
by a year' s national service before returning to South Africa to read
for a BA and an Education Diploma at the University of Natal.
At Peterhouse, he taught a fair amount of Economics in his early days but gravitated to full time Geography later on. He put much thought and effort into his work and his fine results were a just reward for his conscientious effort.
Jon also made a great contribution to the sporting life of the school while he was at Peterhouse. He was i/c U13 cricket and was involved in athletics. He ran a Pedants squash side in the local MESRA squash league and friends were made, and a few beers drunk, in places like Ruzawi River, Macheke, Marondera North and Headlands. The climbing club also came under his wing.
His main sporting love however was rugby. he moved through the ranks before tailing over the Peterhouse 1st XV and running all the rugby at Peterhouse. He also became a national schools rugby selector. One of his sides went to the U.K. to win the first ever World Schools Rugby Festival - Jon stayed at home for the birth of his first child, Tessa - and his 1991 side was described by many as one of the best Peterhouses XVs ever. Jon and his wife Gwyneth were appointed to run Ellis House in 1990 and they threw themselves wholeheartedly into another challenge. Sadly the declining economy claimed the Traffords and an offer from Bophutatswana proved too good, from a financial point of view, to refuse. We thank Jon and Gwyneth for all they did at Peterhouse, we wish them well in Bop and we hope we might see them back here in the not too distant future - after all the beautiful Tessa is going to need schooling at some stage and there is no better place to start than Springvale House.
