PETERHOUSE NOSTALGIA

... MEMORIES ...

A E ('Ben') Benzies (Staff 75 - 82)

'Ben' Benzies died after a short illness on 14th September, 1982, at the age of 66. Ben came to Peterhouse to take up the duties of Accountant in July, 1975, and had been a member of the staff for seven years when he died. Previously he had been Bookkeeper and Acting Manager of the Rhokana Club for two and a half years from March, 1941 , to October, 1943, and thereafter Accountant and Secretary of the Midlands Milling Company, Gweru, from October, 1943, until November, 1974.

Ben was one of the most conscientious, patient and courteous of men. The demands and requirements of the Bursar and other staff must have driven him to despair on occasions, yet he never showed it nor failed to provide the answers required with a smile. His books were always immaculately kept and unfailingly accurate.

The loss of' 'Uncle Ben', as he was general ly known, was a very sad one for Peterhouse and more so for his widow, Dot, and his sons Edward and David.
