We welcome the following members of staff: Mrs Mabel Bettin, who replaces Mrs Kate Sinclair in our Secretarial Studies Department. Mr Robert Chiminya from Midlands Christian College to teach Physics. Mrs Sue Heathcote to teach IT. Mr Liberty Hove from Zimsec to teach English. Mr Ishmael Mazambani from Bernard Mziki to teach History and Geography. Mrs Takudzwa Mutuke from Ellis Robins to teach Shona, Divinity and History. Ms Catriona Taylor who is the new Rector's secretary and Sister Jane Walker who takes over as Head of the Sanatorium.

Sadly Mr Roger Hudson, Head of French and Mrs Connie Zaayman, acting Head of English left at the end of the Easter Term. Mr Hudson has spent 20 years at Peterhouse and he has contributed in many ways. He will be best remembered for his contribution in our Music Department. Of late, he has run a very successful and popular Jazz Band.Mrs Zaayman has taught English at Peterhouse for 8 years. She has been Head of Department and, on the retirement of Mr John Davison at the end of 2002, she agreed to head the Department, in an acting capacity for this term. She is an outstanding teacher, one of the best English teachers in Zimbabwe, she will be sorely missed. Mr Jerry Lousada, our Bursar left at the end of March and Sister Sandy French has retired from the Sanatorium. Sandy has been a "caring ear" to many junior boys; her dedication and commitment to the welfare of the boys will be sorely missed. Mr George Martin will teach French next term. He has had a long association with Peterhouse. Mr Phil Dongo has joined us from Watershed to teach Design and Technology. Mr Simon and Mrs Michelle Scott-Elliot who taught at Hillcrest but spent 2002 in England and New Zealand have joined us. Simon will teach History and English and is a Hockey and Cricket Coach while Michelle will teach Geography and Science subjects. Mr Jon Rheam is our new Bursar. Sister Lucy Webb-Martin will join Sister Walker in our San. Adam Burgess has taken over as Housemaster of Paget.

We are sad to report the deaths in February of Norman January, French teacher and Assistant Housemaster in Malvern, Peter Raynor, who taught classics in the 1960s, and Dr Lizanne Place, mother of Jason in C Block and school doctor at Springvale House and PHG.

Archie and Ann Kennedy left Peterhouse on 13 April 2003 to return to England after 37 years at the school. Archie retired in 1994 and has been living in the retirement complex (Jurassic Park) since then. He has done sterling work in organising the school archives during this time, as well as producing Peterhouse plaques for leavers to buy, the supply of which has now dried up, sadly.

John Carter sadly died on 13 May 2003 in Pietermaritzburg, where he had been living for the past few months. John was a fine man, who chaired EXCO over many years and the new Science Block is named the John Carter Science Block in his honour. He had three sons at the school and was a businessman of note, being Chairman of Delta Corporation (Breweries, Sun Hotels etc) and Barclays Bank, Zimbabwe. His contribution to Peterhouse over many years was as outstanding as it it was selfless.

Mr Brian and Mrs AJ Foakes sadly left at the end of second term for the UK.. They have, in the time they have been here, contributed a great deal to the life of Peterhouse. Brian's contribution to Music and to IT - he set up our two computer rooms, introduced the ICDL, email addresses for pupils and has made us proud of our facility, to teaching and to Paget House - as Housemaster. AJ's contribution in class, as Head of Junior Science, on the cricket field as U14A's coach and Person in Charge of Hockey, together with her input in the House has been outstanding.

Ashley Denman Director of Sport also left at the end of second term for the UK. Taking over from Mr Reg Querl was never going to be easy and we congratulate him on all he has achieved in his five terms here.

Sadly Chaplain Rev George Punshon, retires at the end of third term.

Ivan Jacklin (E63 & Staff 73-82) suddenly died in November 2003 from a heart attack. Ivan was the first Petrean member of staff, Housemaster of Grinham and producer of numerous very successful plays. Since leaving Peterhouse he has taught with distinction at Shiplake College, Henley-on-Thames, England. He and his wife Candy have stayed close to Peterhouse and hosted numerous Petrean cricket matches. Ivan will be sorely missed.

International Examination Results

Congratulations to our A Level teaching staff, the 2002 Cambridge results were outstanding. The overall pass rate of 97.4% is the highest we have had (20% were A grades) and the girls had a 100% pass rate!

There was a 100% pass rate in English, History, French, Mathematics, Chemistry, Art, Geometrical and Mechanical Drawing, and Accounting. In Divinity 1/8 pupils failed, Physics 4/21 failed, Biology 1/26 failed and MOB 2/34 failed. The following boys obtained outstanding results:

S Chinyowa and T Chitapi: 3 As and 1 B
S Manyumwa and J Sidile: 3 As
T Chitaka and L Faull: 2 As and 1B.

At AS, although the pass rate was down on 2001, we had a pass rate of 81% of all subjects taken. The uncertainty and switch from one Board to another could account for this drop.

Three boys have been awarded Honours Ties for their outstanding contribution to Peterhouse Aaron Denenga, Tjaart Walraven and Daniel Calderwood.

The 2003 Peterhouse Festival was one of the best ever. Highlights included the French Play Calamity Jane, The Glass Menagerie and Henry the Tudor Dude, sport against Falcon, Petrean Day and the usual array of music, entertainment and fun, including a French café, jazz, art and craft, stalls, various displays and food stalls. Munyaradzi Chidzonga's performance in the Glass Menagerie was quite outstanding and he was awarded Half Colours for Drama .

See the Festival website

Congratulations to D Coughlan and KR Mkudu who won the Festival Logo Competition.

The Falcon perspective ( "borrowed" from the FOBs website): "Up at Peterhouse our B teams were thoroughly beaten, it must be admitted but the 1st and A teams had some excellent matches. The 14A side went down by 4 wickets. The U15 As won by the same margin reversing losses in the past. Drew Deary with 4-24 helped bowl Peterhouse out for just over 200 and then Jason Paterson led the way with an unbeaten 65 (a score which may have been somewhat reduced by the vagaries of the scorers!). At one stage the U16 A team looked like going down by 9 wickets but clawed their way back and after dropping two catches in two balls lost by just one wicket in an exciting match. Barry Stewart took 5-25 off his 10 overs.

The 1st team had 50 over matches on both Saturday and Sunday. On the Saturday Davie Crouch hit his first century for the school as we reached 242-6, a total we defended to win by a narrow 8 runs. Sunday was even closer in quite a remarkable game. Batting first Falcon collapsed to 90-8, then 110-9. Brandon Corken and Paul Trethowan, 10 and 11 in the batting order were determined not to capitulate quite as easily and were still together when the 50 overs were bowled, having raised the score to 194-9, a record 10th wicket partnership against any school since our records began in 1980. Corken reached a well-earned 50 by hitting the last ball for 4. Peterhouse appeared to cruising to victory but then rather lost their way and suddenly Falcon was in with a real chance. It was not quite to be. A couple of good blows in the last over saw Peterhouse scrape home off the last ball. "

Falcon Weekend : For the first time we hosted all of the matches at Peterhouse. Despite having to look after 230 Falcon boys and staff, the weekend ran very smoothly. The First XV's 21-12 win clinched the inaugural Schweppes "Super 8" Rugby league involving the U16, 2nd XV and 1st XV teams of the top eight rugby schools in Zimbabwe for Peterhouse.

The Schweppes Presentation Dinner 12 September 2003

With coaches, captains and vice-captains from schools countrywide; representatives from the Zimbabwe Rugby Union; The Referees Society; the Press; and of course from Schweppes itself present, the dinner held in the Beit Hall at Prince Edward was a grand affair.

The inaugural competition, sponsored so generously by Schweppes, had attracted much attention with the leagues at U16, 2nd XV and 1st XV level offering a trophy to each winning school, and with the main trophy going to the school with the highest aggregate points from the three Leagues.

Winning three of the four trophies, Peterhouse made it an evening to remember,. John Raynor, captain of our unbeaten U16 team collected the U16 Trophy, Falcon College the 2nd XV Trophy and David Cloete our inspirational 1st XV captain, the 1st XV Trophy.

Finally David returned on stage to be presented with the Grand Trophy as "the inaugural champions of the Schweppes Schools League Competition, 2003 - Peterhouse".

The formal dinner ended with David Cloete being invited to close the proceedings by thanking the sponsors, which he did admirably.

David Cloete, Sean Moan and Aaron Denenga were chosen for the Zimbabwe U23 team. Later David came on for the senior side scoring a try and kicking two conversions.

Team Members: Mbanje T, Richards M, Mujati T, Maigurira, Madondo M, Coghlan D, Bwerinofa KZ, Graham B, Jakasi M, Mahachi NT, Nel R, Kent FJG, Mudimbu TM, Chidzonga T, Howland A, Jangano B, Munetsi K, Ramushu HT, Crossland C, Miller C, Peebles CG.

The team had a very slow start to the season due to the new league structure which reduced the numbers of traditional home and away games against the rugby playing schools with plenty of depth but which added variety. The first half of the season was notable for its success with good victories recorded against the record teams of Watershed and Eaglesvale, St George's 3rd's and the highlight of the season a victory over Heritage 1st XV played away. A well drilled St John's team out played us in the forwards at home and the Jubilee field at PE provided the tigers in waiting an opportunity to sink their fangs into the drumsticks of the roosters!

Easy wins over CBC and Churchill followed which then let to the final stage of a blood or guts battle it out with Falcon who came out just on top after an entertaining fifty minutes of fast and furious action.

The forwards played well but at times were out - rucked. Up front we coped well with the mobility of Mbanje, hooking and line out throwing skills of Mujati, Richards and solid propping of firstly Maguirira and then the more mobile Chitsa. AT lock, Crossland and Bwerinofa shone and Coughlan and Madondo made solid contributions. In the loose Brendan Graham did very well winning the ball in the rucks and of Ramushu shone in being first to the loose ball. Jakazi proved capable at 8th man especially with the blind side break.

In the line No. 1 did well at fly-half but the more natural Kent excelled with hid kicking skills and vision when linked with the quick delivering scrum half Mahachi. At centre Chidzonga shone when linked with the elusive Mudimbu and hard running Mangenje early on in the season. Howland's speed on the left wing was notable as was Jangano's improved cover defense tackling. At full back Munetsi was capable but it was Ndiwere who showed most potential with his ability to kick with both feet and sprinters pace.

The team must be congratulated for giving of their best and when losing only going down by the smallest of margins. I thank Mr Chikobvu for his valuable contributions in training sessions and work with the line.

This team had moderate success but on the whole typically enjoyed hard and fluent Rugby out of the spotlight and as a result more interesting and unspoilt technical marvels of rugby strategy were put into action. Due to the league system this team suffered the loss of home and away fixtures against the big rugby playing schools, which was a negative aspect to be corrected in the future I hope. Top rugby at 1st XV level relies on depth, which may be diluted if lower teams do not play enough rugby.

On the whole an entertaining season.

PASTORAL MATTERS

Nick Stott and members of Zambezi Ministries for spending time at the school during the second term. The boys enjoyed their service on Sunday 27 July.

Over 50 boys and girls were confirmed by the Bishop of Harare at the Confirmation Service on 16 October

Sadly Chaplain - Rev George Punshon, retires at the end of this term.

Chims 2003

B Block boys travelled to the Chimanimani Mountains for the annual Chims Expedition in two groups..

Pocket money

Pocket money was increased in the Easter Term from $ 2 500 to $ 10 000 and then to $40 000 in Third Term

Some things never change - only the styles

A message to parents from the Rector : "Our boys are looking very untidy in their "Nos.1." The main problem is that they wear baggy trousers and their shirts inevitably hang out. I am unhappy with this situation! From next term all boys will wear a regulation school belt when wearing their No.1 uniform. I have ordered the belts, so please ensure that your son's black trousers have belt loops fitted. If they are not, they will be charged to your school account. "

'Mass Action'

Peterhouse was not involved in the 'mass action' which took place at the instigation of the MDC in May 2003.The Rector was granted permission by the Ministry of Education for the Africa Day holiday, 26 May, to be transferred to Friday 30 May, our first fixture free weekend. This seemed sensible in the light of fuel shortages and distances involved. Sadly this was seen by some as collusion with the 'mass action'. This was not the case, as permission was granted long before the 'mass action' was even contemplated! The application was made on behalf of the Peterhouse Group of Schools, Ruzawi and Watershed. Mr MacKay, Headmaster of Ruzawi, was handcuffed and taken to Marondera Police station because his school was closed on the 30 May. The Rector was in Nyanga, but Mr French, the Senior Master, was also taken to the Police Station. Luckily he took the correspondence from the Ministry with him and was only inconvenienced for a short time.

Telephones

A fire in the PTC exchange disrupted all Marondera lines and the schools were without telephones from the 16 June to 4 July.

"Flight to quality" : 500 on 2004 waiting lists

As so often happens when times are difficult, Zimbabwe in 2003 is experiencing a "flight to quality." There are over 500 applicants on the Peterhouse waiting lists for 2004 entry. Petreans are urged to enter their children early, but not before birth!

Service Clubs

Four boys represented our Leo Club at the Leo Club Convention in Gaberone. Our club was voted the runner up in the Administration Section - 116 Clubs were represented! Kholisile Dhliwayo was placed in the top 10 for the award of "Leo of the Year".

Our Leo Club and Interact Club are very involved in local charities, both are helping in our Workers Villages.

From the Leo Club of Peterhouse President :

"Despite the many problems in the country the Leo Club has still managed to carry out community service during this term so far. Our main projects have been:

A visit to the Marondera General Hospital - Children's Ward, where we donated medicines and played with the children. A visit to Kukura Neshungu where we donated a fridge, sang and played with the children.
A visit to Nyameni Children's Home where we played with children and donated various clothes, toys, books and blankets.

We continue to seek your support as we try to help our community."
