OF PETERHOUSE
GOSHO PARK
Gosho
Park, the Peterhouse Conservation Education Project, is situated on
340 ha of land adjacent to the Springvale campus. The park was established
in 1984 and named after Patrick Gosho, a former estate manager of
Springvale for many years, who protected the area thereby enabling the
school to acquire a piece of unspoilt brachystegia woodland. More than
150 different species of birds have been recorded; and there are 72 tree
species. The park is stocked with giraffe, sable, zebra, wildebeest, eland,
waterbuck, impala, klipspringer and duiker.
Its
establishment was aimed at developing awareness of the importance
of conservation of our natural resources. It is used for conservation camps
for primary school pupils, geography field trips, and research projects
in biology.
Peterhouse boys and girls are extensively involved in the management of the park.
The park is open to the public, and many parents and local people visit, particularly at weekends. There is a picnic site and the accomodation in the bush camp is currently being upgraded. This should make it more comfortable for those who wish to stay overnight.
