Dear
Parents and Guardians
The harsh economic climate and spiralling inflation has meant that the supplementary charge anticipated for this term has been changed. Please find attached a letter from the Chairman of our Executive Committee, Mr M S Mattinson.
We were delighted with the results of the 1999 ZJC examination that we received from Zimsec this week. The boys write their final 'A' level examinations later this month.
We had a very positive response from prospective parents at our Open Day on Monday and, as anticipated, I had to field several questions on the "Experiment" that we are conducting with Floating Weekends. Please be assured that there has been no change in policy on boarding despite what the Harare Cocktail Circuit might say.
Boarders acquire skills that help them prepare for success beyond the classroom, they become active participants in life. The camaraderie and fun, seldom experienced in day schools, not only fosters an individual sense of independence but leads to bonds of friendship that last for life.
Speech Day - Friday 7 November 10:30am
I have just had word from Oliver Beaumont, who was to be our Guest of Honour, that due to a medical problem he is unable to be with us at Speech Day. Mr Beaumont, a Petrean, runs our Web page on the Internet and does a tremendous amount for Peterhouse. I am sad that he cannot come.
However, I am pleased to announce that the Reverend Dr Alan Megahey, past Rector, has agreed to be Guest of Honour. Dr Megahey was Rector during the tremendous boom at Peterhouse, after Independence, his vision (amongst other things) led to the starting of Springvale House, Peterhouse Girls and Tinokura.
I look forward to seeing you at Speech Day. It is the formal occasion when we acknowledge the part played by staff and boys in the growth and development of our school during the year. Tea will be served in the Great Court from 9:45am, guests take their seats at 10:20am, staff and Board Members process into Chapel at 10:30am. There are no Harare buses on Speech Day.

B Block Chimanimani Trips
Two groups of B Block boys travel to the Chimanimani Mountains for the "Chims Expedition". This year they will be based at the Outward Bound School, where they will do activities that will encourage teamwork and leadership skills, before going up into the Mountains. My thanks to Mr Simon Scott-Elliot, Mr PAL Davis and Mr G Martin for their part in arranging the trips. All B Block boys will have a letter concerning the trip. B Block parents please ensure you read it, sign the Indemnity Form and return it on Monday.

Springvale Campus Golden Jubilee
As our final function, we are holding a Jubilee Dinner/Dance and reunion for past pupils, parents, staff and friends of Springvale Boys, Springvale House and Peterhouse Girls. The date will be the 6th of November and tickets will cost $35 000.00. All bookings to Penny Raynor (079-23920 evenings, or raynor@ecoweb.co.zw). Please pass on this invitation to anyone who may be interested.
The Zimbabwe Independent is running a 4 page supplement on our Jubilee on Friday 17 October for anyone who is interested.
Petrean Society - Leavers
Before pupils leave Peterhouse, boys and girls usually like to buy items of memorabilia. The cost of these items is very high nowadays, so parents are asked to send either cash or a cheque, made out to Peterhouse, to pay for these articles before they can be sold at the School Shop to leavers. To qualify as a Petrean, a pupil should have spent four years or more to O Level and / or 2 years to A Level. Registration is otherwise automatic. The following will be available:
Petrean Tie (Imported Material) $10 000
Silver Pendant $ 7 000
Silver Cuff Links $12 250
Wall Plaques (Limited Number)$ 1 200
Blazer Badges $ 2 000
Boys will not be allowed to buy the above items if their shop accounts are overdrawn.
I trust you will have a happy and much needed break with your children.
Yours sincerely
J B CALDERWOOD
Rector
