Dear
Parents and Guardians
We enjoyed a wonderful holiday in England and had the opportunity to meet up with two previous Rectors, Mike Bawden and the Reverend Alan Megahey. We also spent time with Ken and Polly Anderson. Ken, a previous Chaplain, and Polly the Secretary of Springvale House. I addressed Petreans at a function organized by Chris Paterson and Rupert Pennant-Rae while we were in London. It was good to see ex-teachers and pupils and to note their great loyalty and love of Peterhouse.
I thought returning home would be difficult but it was good to get back and I am now more resolved and optimistic than I have ever been. Peterhouse is a very special school in a very special country!

Mr Trevor Mushiko will act as Head of French for this term and Mr Robert Chiminya will act as Head of Physics for the term.
We have had a positive and successful start to the term. Staff, teaching and non teaching, parents, boys and girls were involved in a SWOT analysis at Peterhouse (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats). It was a profitable afternoon and the results will be used as the foundation for a revisit of our Strategic Planning exercise of 1997.
On the 12th of June Mrs Davidson, Headmistress of Peterhouse Girls, and I will be hosting a Public Relations evening in Harare. We are interested in meeting prospective parents. If you have friends who might be interested in sending their children to Peterhouse please ask them to phone Mrs Dee Creigh-Smith at Peterhouse - 079 22200/1/2 or 079 24951/2/3.

Housemasters have compiled Telephone Web Networks. If you, as a parent, are tasked to relay messages, I would ask that you place the list of those you will contact next to your telephone or record the numbers in your cell phone directory. Housemasters will contact those at the top of the list, who will in turn, contact those below them until all parents are notified, should it be necessary.

Vale John Carter
I end this letter on a sad note. Mr John Carter passed away on Thursday 13th of May. Mr Carter joined our Executive Committee in 1971 and retired as Chairman of our Board of Governors in 2001. He had a significant influence on the growth and development of this school during the war years and in post Independent Zimbabwe. In the late 70's, numbers at Peterhouse fell to under 200. There were fears that it would close in 1977, that it did not was largely due to Mr Carter and Mr Syd Hayes.
In the 80's Mr Carter was enthusiastic about the opening of Springvale House and Peterhouse Girls. It was he who drove through the plans for the building of the Sir Humphrey Gibbs Centre, which transformed the appearance of the school. Then, when the political and economic outlook were bleak in the late 90's, he insisted that the school should proceed with building the new science block. It is appropriate that it was named after him.
Peterhouse owes a great deal to the vision and determination of Mr John Carter, he "will be honoured here for as long as Peterhouse stands, rooted in rock of the Christian faith".
I asked Reverend Alan Megahey to write the text of a Eulogy for the life of Mr Carter and it was read at a Memorial Service on the first Sunday of term.. Click here for a fuller tribute
Yours sincerely
J B CALDERWOOD
