PETERHOUSE BOYS' SCHOOL

RECTOR'S NEWSLETTER - JUNE 2003

Dear Parents and Guardians

The mid-term break is welcomed by staff and boys and I hope it will give you the opportunity to catch up with how your son is coping at school. He will have a mid-term report, please peruse it, sign it and return it after the break.

I hope that your son will use this weekend to revise for the internal examinations. They begin on Tuesday,1 July.

CALENDAR DATES

Each year in October, CHISZ submits its proposed calendar to the Ministry of Education, for the forthcoming year. Although it does not always follow exactly the Government schools calendar, it does comply with the required teaching days prescribed by the Ministry. Once accepted, permission for any deviations from our calendar must be granted by the Secretary for Education. Last term I was successful in obtaining permission for the Africa Day holiday, 26th of May, to be transferred to Friday 30th May, our first fixture free weekend. It seemed sensible in the light of fuel shortages and distances involved. Sadly this was seen by some as collusion with the 'mass action'. This was not the case as permission was granted long before the 'mass action' was even contemplated!

My application was made on behalf of the Peterhouse Group of Schools, Ruzawi and Watershed. Mr MacKay, Headmaster of Ruzawi, was handcuffed and taken to Marondera Police station because his school was closed on the 30th May. I was in Nyanga but Mr French, our Senior Master was also taken to the Police Station. Luckily he took the correspondence from the Ministry with him and was only inconvenienced for a short time!

We returned from our break at the normal time on the 2nd June.

SCHOOL POLICY ON BULLYING, EXTORTION ('TAXING') AND THEFT

I feel it is necessary to remind parents of my policy on bullying, extortion and theft. I will not tolerate such practices at Peterhouse and every attempt is being made to eradicate them. Please be warned that if your son is caught bullying, 'taxing' or stealing, I will ask you to remove him.

Please take this as your 'warning', I have warned your sons repeatedly at assemblies.
