PETERHOUSE BOYS' SCHOOL

RECTOR'S NEWSLETTER - JULY 2003

Dear Parents and Guardians

Life has been very difficult without telephones; a fire in the PTC exchange disrupted all Marondera lines, we were without telephones from the 16th of June to the 4th of July! As I write this letter we are again without any lines!

Peterhouse did not take part in the politically motivated 'stay-aways' and will end term on Thursday 7th of August. Several parents have asked if they can take their sons home after our Festival - Sunday 3rd of August - I am afraid that this will not be possible. While I will be very sad if this means that some parents will not be able to attend the Festival, we must continue classes until the 7th of August. School ends after the end of term Assembly and Service at 10 30am on the 7th.

Every pupil at Peterhouse, this includes Peterhouse Girls and Springvale House, will receive a copy of a letter concerning our school fees for the Michaelmas term - next term. Please read it carefully and comply with its instructions.

Please note the following points carefully:

PETERHOUSE FESTIVAL

This promises to be the highlight of our term and Mr John Barrie and Ms Bryony Rheam are working tirelessly to ensure that it will be. Your son has been given a Booking Sheet and the latest update of the Festival Programme. Please send your returns back to school on Monday.

DRUGS AT PETERHOUSE

Sadly two senior boys were caught smoking marijuana at school. In September last year I wrote to you about "Young People and Drugs". I am sending the letter home to D Block parents for their perusal. I must reiterate our policy on Drugs. "Any boy or girl found in the possession of drugs, under the influence of drugs or supplying drugs to other boys and girls, must be expected to be 'withdrawn' from Peterhouse immediately". I do in the first instance ask the parents to "withdraw" the boy. If parents 'withdraw' the boy, he can be readmitted to another school and I generally try to facilitate the transfer. If parents decide not to "withdraw" the child, I have no option but to refer the matter to the Police and the Ministry of Education. When a boy is expelled, he will only be readmitted to another school with the permission of the Secretary of Education.

Our policy is designed to protect other pupils and the reputation of Peterhouse. If a boy seeks help at school, we will do everything in our power to be sympathetic. However, parents must be mindful that the school must be seen to uphold the law of the land and to maintain discipline.

MOCK AND SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS

These have now been completed. Parents of boys in Sixth Form are reminded of the Parent / Teacher meeting on Thursday the 7th of August from 10:00 - 11:30am. Boys writing IGCSE and 'O' level examinations have been encouraged to produce a study programme that must start next week. Subject teachers will help the boys with this programme; please ensure that you see it and that during the school holidays, you help your son stick to it.

International Examinations Final reminders for payment have been sent to those parents who appear not to have paid for the Cambridge Examination Fees. Entries must be sent to Cambridge within the next couple of weeks. If payment is not made before these entries are sent, your son will not be entered.

Vth FORM TEAM BUILDING 2003

We spent a very productive day in Gosho Park on Sunday 8th of July. The boys involved themselves fully in a wide range of activities and judging from their response, they felt it was very worthwhile! My thanks to Mr Ashley Denman, Andrew Knight, Tjaart Walraven, Luke Hanmer, Edward Arkle, Chris Kreik, Leeroy Rensberg, Blessing Mokgohloa and David Cloete for their help on Sunday.

LEO CLUB OF PETERHOUSE

From our President

"Despite the many problems in the country the Leo Club has still managed to carry out community service during this term so far. Our main projects have been:

A visit to the Marondera General Hospital - Children's Ward, where we donated medicines and played with the children. A visit to Kukura Neshungu where we donated a fridge, sang and played with the children.
A visit to Nyameni Children's Home where we played with children and donated various clothes, toys, books and blankets.

We continue to seek your support as we try to help our community."

TINOKURA CAMPING WEEKEND

It amazes me how each year this event coincides with the coldest day of the year! It was a huge success thanks to the efforts of the boys, the parents and the monitors of Tinokura. Special thanks to Mr Paul and Mrs Rachel Davis.

CHISZ SECONDARY HEADS MID-YEAR CONFERENCE

I will be away until Wednesday night at the CHISZ Mid-year Conference, Mr AL French will act as Rector.

I trust that you will have an enjoyable break with your sons and that the final part of this term is warmer and runs smoothly.

Yours sincerely
