PETERHOUSE BOYS' SCHOOL

RECTOR'S NEWSLETTER - APRIL 2003

Dear Parents and Guardians

I am very pleased to report that we have completed another very successful term. Of concern however, is the state of our economy and the rate of inflation which appears to be spiraling up at an alarming rate. Alarming, because our existence is threatened by it. The Ministry of Education has introduced regulations to check unnecessary increases in school fees. In normal times we would welcome these regulations. However with the present increase in prices in all commodities these regulations inhibit our maintaining those standards we strive to achieve.

Our Chairman, Mr Stuart Mattinson, has asked me to attach a letter concerning fees for next term to this circular. If you have any queries, doubts or comments please contact our Bursar, Mr Jon Rheam, before the start of next term.

Staffing

Sadly we lose the services of Mr Roger Hudson, Head of French and Mrs Connie Zaayman, acting Head of English. Mr Hudson has spent 20 years at Peterhouse and he has contributed in many ways. He will be best remembered for his contribution in our Music Department. Of late, he has run a very successful and popular Jazz Band.

Mrs Zaayman has taught English at Peterhouse for 8 years. She has been Head of Department and, on the retirement of Mr John Davison at the end of 2002, she agreed to head the Department, in an acting capacity for this term. She is an outstanding teacher, one of the best English teachers in Zimbabwe, she will be sorely missed.

Mr Jerry Lousada, our Bursar left at the end of March and Sister Sandy French has retired from the Sanatorium. Sandy has been a "caring ear" to many junior boys; her dedication and commitment to the welfare of the boys will be sorely missed.

Mr George Martin will teach French next term. Those of you who have had a long association with Peterhouse will know Mr Martin to be a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher. Mr Phil Dongo will join us from Watershed. He will teach Design and Technology. Mr Simon and Mrs Michelle Scott-Elliot have taught at Hillcrest but spent 2002 in England and New Zealand. Simon will teach History and English, he is a Hockey and Cricket Coach while Michelle will teach Geography and Science subjects.

Mr Jon Rheam is our new Bursar. I am very pleased to announce that Sister Lucy Webb-Martin will join Sister Walker in our San.

Cambridge Examinations & Certificates

Pupils being entered for Cambridge examinations in November should receive, with this letter, a statement of the fees payable in sterling. There will be charges in Z$ on the usual end of term statement. These are to cover Zimsec entries, stationery and courier charges.

Pupils in the Fifth form have been charged $50 000 as a textbook deposit. This nominal amount, which is unlikely to cover the cost of replacing a single book next year, is intended to encourage pupils to look after their books and to help with final accounts when pupils leave Peterhouse.

We have received all the November 2002 Cambridge Certificates (IGCSE and A level). These may be collected form the Director of Studies provided accounts are paid up. Zimsec certificates are expected next term.

Parent/Teacher meetings

Please note that we will be arranging four Parent-Teacher meetings next term:

1015 - 1130 Friday 30th May B block

1015 - 1130 Thursday 19th June 5A and A block

1015 - 1130 Friday 11th July Fifth form

1000 - 1115 Wednesday 6th August Sixth form

A and B block meetings are for parents only. Fifth and Sixth form pupils will attend with their parents. We believe that these meetings are very important and useful for all concerned. Please attend if you can but do not arrive near the end of the session. There will be a D block meetings in the third term.

My thanks go to Mr TW Songore and Mr GP Makoni who accompanied our Basketball team on their recent tour to Durban. We won 3 and lost 3 matches and were placed 6th out of 16 schools. More importantly I received an e-mail from the Tournament organizer who asked me to please compliment the boys on their exemplary behaviour and the way in which they conducted themselves on and off the court. Well done !

Squash : Mashonaland Championships

Sadly, this year there was a clash with our Interhouse Relays Meeting and the Championships, and so fewer were able to compete than in the past. In U19 there were 56 entries. Congratulations to S Jogee who came 7th, T Rensberg 19th, K Chakonda 23rd and I Manase 25th. In the U14s, C Tanner and TG Chakonda who came 3rd and 4th respectively.

FESTIVAL 2003 from Mr J Barrie

Our biennial Festival will be next term from the 28th July to the 3rd August. Despite the prevailing social and economic problems we would like to make this year's Festival particularly remarkable. The Festival will begin on Monday the 28th of July with the Vth Form performance of The Glass Menagerie. This will be followed by a French play on the 30th July and the main play, a musical, Henry the Tudor Dude will be on Friday the 1st and Saturday the 2nd of August, the latter being the gala performance. Saturday will see the 1st team Rugby match vs Falcon as its main attraction. This year all Falcon games, including Hockey and Soccer will be played at Peterhouse on that weekend.

On the Sunday we look forward to hosting a variety of activities including a French café, jazz, art and craft, stalls, various displays and food stalls. The day will end with an evening of music, poetry and dance. So if you're not already exhausted, make a date to join us for a really great week of entertainment!

Details of booking and accommodation will be available at a later date.

Dress

Our boys look very untidy in their "Nos. 1." The main problem is that they wear baggy trousers and their shirts inevitably hang out. I am unhappy with this situation ! From next term all boys will wear a regulation school belt when wearing their No.1 uniform. Please ensure that your son's black trousers have belt loops fitted. If they are not, I have ordered the belts and they will be charged the your school account. .

Chinoyi bus

We have been running a bus to Chinhoyi on Fixture Free Weekends to try and assist parents in that area and further North. Unfortunately the numbers using it in the Lent term were not economically viable. This service will be discontinued from the Trinity Term 2003. Should there be sufficient demand we would consider re-instating it in the future.

Payment of fees

Will parents please note that if fees are deposited directly to a bank they should be paid to the account of Peterhouse at Standard Chartered Bank, Marondera. The account number is 0100254285600. If possible they should be deposited at another Standard Chartered Branch and the special Standard Chartered School Fee deposit slips used, not the normal ones. This ensures that we can identify the payee. A number of parents are still paying to our Barclays account, unfortunately these payments attract bank charges and in addition is it often impossible to identify them. Where any future payments are made to Barclays we will have to charge the payee with any bank charges incurred.

Jenny and I will be away from Peterhouse until the start of next term. We wish you a restful Easter Holiday period.

Yours sincerely
