PETERHOUSE BOYS' SCHOOL

RECTOR'S NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER 2002

Dear Parents and Guardians

I hear that there are rumours circulating in Harare that there are problems of a racial nature at Peterhouse. While I acknowledge that Harare is probably the "rumour capital" of the world, I feel it is necessary to dispel such thoughts.

Sentiments are running high in Zimbabwe at the moment and sadly some are using racial differences "to fan the fire". While the boys are probably more sensitive to this issue than they were two or three years ago, I can assure you that there is not a "racial" problem at Peterhouse. We as parents and staff have a duty to educate our young to respect the cultural differences that exist. We at Peterhouse have "expectations" - these expectations are not influenced by cultural differences. When next you hear such talk please try to put the record straight or at least refer it to me so that I may have the opportunity to put it straight before it becomes damaging.

This has been a hectic and successful term for our Jazz Band, thanks to the efforts of Mr Roger Hudson. The Band played at the Music Department Dinner Dance on Saturday 12th October. I was sad to see so few parents at the function, it proved to be a real tonic for those present. My thanks to Mrs Yiend and Mr Hudson for a most enjoyable evening.
