PETERHOUSE BOYS' SCHOOL

RECTOR'S NEWSLETTER - DECEMBER 2002

Dear Parents and Guardians

This has been an extraordinary year for most!

It would be foolish to say that we, at Peterhouse, have not been affected by the situation, but as far as possible, we have tried to manage the situation so that those in our care continue to grow and develop in a normal way.

Staff

At Speech Day we said farewell to Mr John Davidson. Mr Davidson joined Peterhouse in 1958 and has spent all but a few years here. Although he is retiring he will still run the School Library. Father Tandi is also retiring but will return to run the Chapels in our Villages. Miss Seranne Jack leaves to get married; Mr Chris Davison completes his two year bonding and moves to Falcon. Mr Chris Nyzika hopes to teach in England, he wants to further his cricket-umpiring career there; while Mr Taurayi Muronda hopes to study further in England. Sister Jenny Milne leaves for England - she has run our Sanatorium for eight years. I thank those staff leaving for their dedicated service and wish them happiness and good fortune in the future.

I would like, on your behalf, to take this opportunity to thank all members of staff at Peterhouse for their support and commitment.

Housemaster of Founders

I am pleased to announce that Mr Trevor Mushiko will take over in Founders as Acting Housemaster. Mr Mushiko went to Hamilton High, has a BA General degree from the University of Zimbabwe; studied French at the University de Poitiers, France, and obtained his teaching certificate at the University of Zimbabwe.

Cell Phones 2003

Please be reminded of the following: D Block are not permitted to have cell phones at school. C Block to A Block will keep their cell phones in the lock-up metal cabinet in the Housemasters office - they will have limited access. Seniors may keep their cell phones in their lockers - locked in their lockers! All numbers relating to the phones will be entered in a register that will be kept in the Housemasters study. Note - Peterhouse cannot be held responsible for the loss or theft of cell phones.

Payment of School Fees

With effect from January 2003 we will be using our Standard Chartered Bank account in Marondera for school fees. The number of the account is 0100254285600. The school has school deposit forms, which should be used if depositing direct with Standard Chartered. These forms are available in any Standard Chartered bank branch and should be used instead of ordinary deposit forms. Whilst we still require a copy of the deposit form to be forwarded to us, if this does go astray, and you have used the correct form we will be able to identify your deposit, which we cannot do at present.

Payment in Cash - Please note that for security reasons, with effect from January 2003, ALL payments in cash must be made to the Accounts office at the Boys school and will not be accepted at Springvale or the Girls school. Cheque payments may still be made to these two latter schools on the opening day of term.

Regrettably as a result of the inflationary situation we have had to withdraw the facility for paying a year in advance at three times the rate of the first term. We will still accept payment for the three terms before the start of the first term, but this will be based on our budgeted increases for terms two and three. Should the actual increases be greater that the budgeted ones you will not be required to pay the difference. Should they be less we will refund you at the year-end. Any parent wishing to make use this offer should contact the Assistant Bursar (Finance) Mrs. Griggs for details of the amount payable. A letter from the Chairman of Exco. Mr MS Mattinson, concerning school fees for 2003 is attached.

Leavers Ball

The Ball, held at the Italian Club, was a great success thanks to the efforts of Mrs. Kathy Sole, Mrs. Penny Raynor and the mothers they "in-spanned." The décor, food and music certainly made it a night to be remembered.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Congratulations to Mr George Yiend, the cast and all those who were involved with the staging of our junior play.

Springvale Campus Golden Jubilee

From Mrs P Raynor - Co-ordinator "The Committee of the G.J celebrations invites all past pupils, staff and parents of Springvale boys, Springvale House and Peterhouse Girls to our launch on 14th January 2003 at 11.30 am at the Springvale Campus. The Thanksgiving Service and Address will be followed by a picnic lunch with a cash bar. PLEASE send numbers of those attending to springvale@mango.zw by 15th December 2002 Past pupils of Springvale House who are now at PHB have already been counted in our numbers for catering purposes."

Term dates

Term begins for all (Vth Forms included) at 17.30 on Monday 13th January 2003 and term ends at 1000 on Thursday 10th April 2003. 1st FFW Friday 7th February - Monday 10th February Mid-term Thursday 27th Feb. - Tuesday 4th March 3rd FFW Friday 21st March - Monday 24th March

2001 - School Magazine

Mrs Sinclair has received copies of the magazine. Unfortunately the printers have made some serious mistakes with the layout and these will have to be corrected. The 2001 magazine will, therefore, only be ready at the start of next term.

May I take this opportunity to wish you a safe and Holy Christmas and I hope and pray that 2003 will be a better year for all in Zimbabwe

Yours sincerely
