PETERHOUSE
BOYS' SCHOOL
Dear
Parents and Guardians
Thankfully for boys and Staff, the holiday period is upon us, and it is time to rest and recharge batteries.
It has been a long and trying term, and sadly we have been beleaguered with ill-health for the last two weeks. I thank all Staff, and in particular the Sanatorium Staff, who have coped so admirably with the 'flu' epidemic.
For many this has been a very difficult period of time. We, at Peterhouse are fortunate to be sheltered from what goes on around us. We have been able to live normal lives, and yes, I am pleased to report, we have completed another very successful term.
Sadly,
our Patron Dr. N.A.F.Williams, or Bob as he was affectionately known,
passed away recently. He was aged 82. Bob was born in Zimbabwe, attended
Ruzawi, St. Andrew's College, Grahamstown, Rhodes University and was then
awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to study Law at Magdelene College, Oxford.
He distinguished himself, at sport and represented Rhodes at 1st Team Rugby,
Cricket, Boxing, Squash, Hockey and Rowing! He was even selected to play
for the Springbok Hockey side. During the 2nd World War, he distinguished
himself in the Royal Navy and was twice recommended for the Distinguished
Service Cross. On his return to this country after the war, and became
a farmer, successful businessman and director of companies. It was, however,
his significant contribution to Private Schools in this Country that he
will be best remembered. He served Ruzawi School for a total of 42 years.
He served Peterhouse for a total of 38 years and, during that time, attended
over 30 Speech Day Ceremonies. He served on our Executive Committee from
1960 to 1976 and was Chairman from 1963 to 1976. He was Chairman of our
Board of Governors from 1977 to 1997, when he was appointed out Patron.
His contribution was not confined only to Ruzawi and to Peterhouse. He
attended the inaugural meeting of the Association of Governing Bodies in
1962, and was Chairman of that body (or ATS as it is now known) from 1964
to 1984. When Private Schools opened their doors to Black Pupils, in 1962,
he was the founder Chairman of the Central Bursary Fund, which helped finance
their education. Seeing the need for young Zimbabweans to return to Zimbabwe,
to teach in our Schools, he started the ATS/ CHISZ Teaching Bursary Fund
in the late 1980's. This fund has sponsored over 120 Students, at Rhodes
University, since 1990. Many of them still teach in our Schools today.
In 1988 he was awarded a Doctor of Laws, (LLD) Honours Causa, for his contribution
to Education. He was truly an outstanding man, with great vision, determination,
integrity and concern, the likes of whom will seldom be seen again. Our
final full School Eucharist this term was dedicated to the Life of Bob
Williams. May He Rest in Peace.
One of the major factors that distinguishes us as a school is our loyal and committed Staff. They include not just those in the classroom but also our administrative staff, cleaning staff, estates and maintenance staff, transport staff and those involved in the laundry and kitchens.
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge their service to Peterhouse. We live in very difficult times, yet provide an island of normality for those in our care. I thank all staff for their support, for their selflessness and their loyalty to Peterhouse.
Sadly we say farewell to four members of Staff this term.
David Makwindi joined Peterhouse - for one year! - in 1989. During his time here he has been outstanding in and out of the classroom. He has taught Mathematics and Geography - he has coached sport, run the school tuckshop and has made a tremendous success of Founders as Housemaster. David leaves to join a Church Ministry. We will see him from time to time. I wish him happiness at his new calling.
Tenson Tinofirei leaves after seven years of teaching Physics at Peterhouse. He has been an outstanding teacher and will be sorely missed in the Science Department. I wish him success and happiness in his teaching career in England.
Suzanne Barrington has made a huge impact at Peterhouse in a relatively short period of time. As Head of Science she has taught Biology; she has involved herself fully in our House System and she has been outstanding as a coach at Peterhouse and Peterhouse Girls. I thank her for her input over the years and wish her happiness back in England.
Jeanie Lousada, Rector's Secretary, left at the end of July. I thank her for her assistance, her loyalty and commitment to Peterhouse.
Next term, we welcome Artwell Chibowora who will replace Suzanne Barrington as Biology teacher. Artwell is an experienced 'A' Level Biology teacher who joins us from St. Ignatius College.
We welcome too, Godwin Chikobvu who will teach Geography and Mathematics. Godwin has taught at Marlborough High and Prince Edward - he is an accomplished cricket and rugby coach.
Tenson Tinofirei's replacement will join us in January. He is an experienced and outstanding teacher from Midlands Christian College. Two University students in their final year will join us to teach Science next term.
Mrs. Bev Bekker has joined us as Rector's Secretary. I hope that she will be happy at Peterhouse.
Much time and trouble is taken to ensure that we appoint top quality teachers - teachers who will continue to uphold the strong traditions and excellence which characterizes Peterhouse.
'A' Block, V and VI Form will write external examinations next term. Please ensure that these examinations have been paid for. If you have deposited into our FCA, please make sure that you have given the school a copy of the deposit slip. Please help your son, by providing him with opportunities to revise during this holiday period.
This term, I have made comments on 'C' Block, 'A' Block, V and VIth Form Reports and I have perused 'D' and 'B' Block. I believe that there has been a general improvement in the boys work ethic during the course of this term. I thank the Academic Tutors and the boy's Housemasters for this general improvement.
Pupils and Members of our Geography and Biology departments spent time at Rifa Camp. They returned safely, no thanks to the number of lion in camp!
Computer rooms: The first of the two computer rooms has been set up in Gibbs Centre - both will come into commission next term. My thanks to Mr Foakes, Mr. Snook and Mr. Lousada.
If you are able to lobby for our right to offer both Local and International Examinations, I'd ask you to do so. A steering Committee of concerned parents has been set-up, to take up these issues with the Minister of Education. Please contact Mrs. Jan Robertson at Chisipite, if you can help.
This has been a hectic term for our Choirs. I thank Mrs. Yiend and Mr. Foakes for their considerable input and congratulate all concerned on the success of the Three Choirs Festival hosted here, and at Arundel. A combined Peterhouse/Ruzawi Choir sang beautifully at the Bob Williams Memorial Service held in Harare.
A selection of our Musicians travelled to Mutare this last weekend. They were well received by the audience there.
I am very happy to award School Colours for Music, to Tendai Chitapi. Tendai is an outstanding Muscian, who has contributed a great deal to music during his career here.
I make mention of our Jazz Band, who under the guidance of Mr. Roger Hudson, continue to entertain here at School and at special 'gigs' in Harare.
Sadly, because of illness, the Inter-House Drama Competition had to be cancelled this term. It is my hope that several of the Productions will still take place, next term. Miss Seranne Jack has spent many hours preparing for the competition. I thank her for her efforts.
Inter-House Chess. The Wright Trophy was won by Maxwell Rugonye. He beat Clifford Changa in the final. Congratulations.
Honours I am very pleased to award two Honours ties this term. The first award goes to Eric Matambo for his service to music, his House and the cultural life of the school. The second is to Farisai Kambarami for his service to the school choir, to music, to his House and the cultural life and the school.
Rugby
We have enjoyed a successful term. I would like to make mention of our 1st Team Rugby. I congratulate Mr. Paul Davies and Mr. Allen French, who have coached the side, and Alastair Sole our Captain. As you know, Mr. Reg Querl successfully coached 1st Teams at Peterhouse for 14 years. Losing him to Falcon put a great deal of pressure on our coaches and the boys. I feel they have acquited ourselves with distinction. In all, our 1st team only lost three matches, one convincingly to St. John's College, and two narrowly to St. George's, the second encounter saw us go down 20 points to 19. Narrowly beating Falcon (at Falcon) was too, quite an achievement!
Rugby - Played 80, Won 57, Drew 3, Lost 20 (Points for: -1966, Points Against 901) 1st XV Summary: - Played 10, Won 6, Drew 1, Lost 3. (Points for: - 222, points against 148) As mentioned earlier this term, we managed to get 5 boys into the Craven Week Rugby side. Congratulations to Alastair Sole, Brian Mujati, Sean Moan, David Cloete, who captained the side, and Eric Yamoah. Simon Douse was chosen as non-travelling reserve.
Basketball
Basketball is now played in the winter term and our side travelled to Gokemere, in the Masvingo Province, to play in the "Top Schools Tournament." Congratulations to the boys on being placed 2nd overall, and Brian Musana, who received a cheque for a $1000.00 for being the most outstanding Player of the Tournament.
Congratulations too, to T. Tawengwa who has been selected to represent Zimbabwe at Basketball. .
Hockey
In all we played 48 matches, we won 30, we drew 9 and we lost 9. ( Goals for 174, Goals against 63.)
1st X1 Summary: - Played 18, Won 3, Drew 6, Lost 9. (Goals for 8, Goals against 29) Congratulations to Terrance Keith who was chosen to represent Zimbabwe at U19B level.
The following teams were unbeaten this term: - The 3rd X1, the U16A's, the U15A's and the under 14 A and B's. 3.2.3
Soccer
Played 37, Won 7, drew 6, lost 24 (Goals for: -49, Goals against 107)
1st Team Summary: - Played 11, won 2, drew 1, lost 8, (Goals for: -13, Goals against 30)
Cricket
The following boys have been selected to represent Zimbabwe Country Districts at cricket during this holiday period. U14, Ballance G, Gaisford J. Peebles A, Mpofu F, Tanner C. U16, Bentley M, Gulab V, Loubser A, Querl G. U19, Cloete D, Davy J, Kitkat R, Nyamuzinga S.
For those in and around Harare at the end of August, we invite you to watch our 1st X1 play CBC, Churchill and Lomagundi at the Prince Edward Cricket Festival. This festival takes place from 28th-30th August.
Stealing: I am very concerned about the increase in theft at school. Boys have little regard to their own property let alone others property! Please, as parents, talk to your sons in this regard, it is your responsibility to educate them in this matter.
Cell Phones: I must remind you that boys in 'C' 'B' and 'A' Block must keep their cell phones in the Metal Box in their House Office. If boys in these blocks are found with cell phones in their lockers, their block will loose the right to have cell phones at school.
'B' Block Chimanimani Trip Your son will receive a letter from Mr. Denman concerning next terms trip.
I would like to end by thanking you for your support and co-operation during this difficult time - it has been a time when we have pulled together - we must continue to do so.
I hope and pray that this will be a peaceful holiday period for you and your family.
Yours sincerely
J B CALDERWOOD
