PETERHOUSE BOYS' SCHOOL

RECTOR'S NEWSLETTER - JANUARY 2002

Dear Parents and Guardians

It has certainly been an interesting and hectic three week period for Jenny and me. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those parents who have made us feel so welcome and thank the staff for their support and help. In particular, I would like to thank Mr French - Senior Master, Mr Shaw - Director of Studies and Mrs Jeanie Lousada - Rector's Secretary.

Please note the following points carefully:

ELECTION WEEKEND/SECURITY

In line with other CHISZ schools and on the advice of PROPOL, we have decided to switch our 'Mid-term' Fixture Free Weekend with the newly announced Election weekend dates.

Accordingly, the dates of the 2nd Fixture Free Weekend will be from Thursday 7th March at 10.30 a.m., to 10.00 a.m. on Tuesday, 12th March AND NOT 28th February to 5th March as shown on the calendar.

It is impossible to reach a decision that will suit everyone and I apologise in advance for any inconvenience this change may cause.

At this moment in time our buses will run as usual but obviously whether they do run will depend on the situation at the time.

If you think your son will be away from school for longer than the period mentioned, please inform his Housemaster, giving dates and contact numbers.

We have considered, carefully, the security situation in the country up until the end of this term. Certain extra precautions have come into effect; matches are ending earlier to ensure that buses do not travel at night; every vehicle leaving Peterhouse has a cell phone - the numbers are kept with Mrs Lousada, Mr Denman and myself.

If, on your travels, you come across trouble - trouble that we may encounter going or returning from a fixture, please phone the school. We will alert the bus..

You may like to note the following telephone numbers.

Peterhouse 24951/2/3 22200/1/2/3/4 Rector above, then Ext. 269 or 011-605511 Bursar 21683 or 011-415787 Headmistress PHG 011-603217 Headmaster SVH 22314 or 011-602229

Each House is establishing a Communication Web. If you have a new telephone number or have not given us your e-mail number, please complete the tear-off slip and return it on Monday.

We obviously cannot envisage every possible security threat but be rest assured that we will always act in the best interests and safety of your son.

APPOINTMENTS

We welcome to our staff Mrs Frances Yiend who takes over as Director of Music; Mr George Yiend, who will be teaching Art at Peterhouse and PHG; Mr Cliford Tswatswa, who teaches Geography; Mr Ashley Denman, who is our new Sports Administrator; Mr Philemon Chirombe, who teaches Commerce and Mathematics and Shane Dodd - Petrean - who joins us for a term as a Junior Master.

After a very successful leadership and Team Building course at Outward Bound the Prefects returned with Alastair Sole as Head of School and Lionel Faull and Rufaro Mapanda as his Deputies. The following boys were appointed Heads of Houses:

Ellis : Peter le Roux
Founders : Rufaro Mapanda
Grinham : Lionel Faull
Malvern : Farisai Kambarami
Paget : Simon Douse
Snell : Muvirimi Kupara

Congratulations.

DISCIPLINE

Sadly I have had to ask that three boys be withdrawn from school.

The first stole two cell phones and tried to sell one. Provision is being made for C, B and A Block to have their phones registered and locked in the House Office. Vth and VIth Form may keep their own, locked in their lockers. Note that D Block boys are not permitted cell phones at school.

Two boys were involved in bullying; I will not tolerate bullying at Peterhouse.

EXAMINATION RESULTS - AS and IGCSE

We had some outstanding results! I congratulate the teaching staff on their efforts, especially at AS Level.

At IGCSE I commend the following boys:
