This site will continue as the Petrean Society website incorporating the Petrean Bush Telegraph and loads of nostalgic photographs and material from Peterhouse' s rich past. PETERHOUSE BOYS HALF TERM NEWSLETTER Dear Parents and Guardians, Thank you for your support at this very sensitive and difficult time. The mid-term break will end at 10:00am on Tuesday 1st July. Mid-year and "mock" examinations begin on Wednesday 2nd July. I have asked your boys to keep a low profile this weekend, they must use the time to revise, relax and rest at home. School fees The present economic situation in the country, with the spiralling increase in prices, is making life almost impossible for us at the moment. We need to recoup running costs and therefore have to send invoices home with boys at Fixture Free Weekends. The invoices will include the cost of Fixture Free Weekend Transport; medicines and chemicals used by examination classes in the Science Department. It is imperative that you pay at the end of each weekend. Boys must hand in the cash / cheques to their Housemasters at 10:00am (roll-call) on Tuesday. Parents who fail to pay will have to settle these bills at the inflated rate. Academic All boys will be involved in writing mid-year and "mock" examinations from 2nd - 11th July. Peterhouse is one of the few schools where "mock" A Level examination results are taken into consideration for University entry in South Africa and Australia. Congratulations to Tatenda Banga who was awarded prizes for his entry in the Zim Post Letter Writing Competition. RECTOR'S MESSAGE TO PETREANS Dear Petreans, There is still confusion with respect to the school`s web-site But very soon clarity will prevail. Tap Chinyadza and Shanti Makaya, of AIT and both Petreans, are working on the new format- one even I will be able to operate! Thankfully Oliver has agreed to continue managing the Petrean site which will be linked to our main page. He has done so much for the Petrean Society over the years, I cannot tell you how grateful we are for his input and support. Term began 9 days ago. We were ordered to close school 17 days early last term at Easter. We opened 14 days earlier than scheduled this term and thankfully we will not miss out on too much lesson time- that 17 days included the Easter break which would have been during term time. Sadly our athletes, in particular, were disadvantaged by the early closure but I hope that they will have a chance to realise their potential at the National Championships in Hwange next week . The longer holiday period was a busy and productive one even if it was filled with its share of emotional `highs` and `lows`, especially on the political front. Several teams from Peterhouse and Peterhouse Girls traveled to South Africa and Europe. Two boys competed in the Penn Athletics Championships in the USA and our rugby side was undefeated at Cottco- beating a much fancied PE side on the Saturday. I am certain that you will read about our successes elsewhere. What you should know and what is now quite evident is that our pupils make a huge impact wherever they go! It seems that those `old fashioned` norms and values that have been our cornerstone for years still count for something in the world out there! I have had several e mails, some even from strangers who bumped into our groups, with comments that convince me that there is still something very special about the education on offer in this country and in particular here at Peterhouse. Goodies for staff At the end of last term, thanks to my wife Jenny, and Roseanne Zeederberg, an order was placed with Macro South Africa for groceries for staff. The `goodies` arrived just after Easter thanks to Rolex and Mr De Robillard, who secured discounts for us and even transported them at no cost. His refrigerated truck made two trips to the Lodge- there are still tire marks on the lawn! to deliver a HUGE quantity of goods. Every salaried member of staff-113 in the three schools, received somewhere in the region of SA Rands 650.00 worth of goods. Jenny managed to think of just about everything- from Rice, oil, margarine to Cadbury`s chocolate, Fizz-pops, (Greenies didn`t take his), toothbrushes and toothpaste. It really was like Christmas- better in fact, and at a time when elections were imminent, ZESA was poor and the shops in Marondera were empty! The goods filled the verandah at the Lodge and I had to place a security guard on our lawn until they were distributed. Jenny was fantastic- she dealt with the distribution- ably assisted by three of the five Hough children, who sprinted from one item to another and could easily end up as `packers` in Tesco`s or wherever. All of this would not have been possible without money from The Petrean (UK) Appeal! My thanks to all who contribute in any way and especially to Rupert Pennant-Rae who continues to administer the fund and ensure that it is in a healthy state. I just wish that you could have seen the reaction of the staff to the hamper! The Elections The Elections followed and were relatively peaceful. More work had been done on manipulating Constituencies, than on the people- but not even that prevented what I sense is the real will of Zimbabwe`s people- everyone wants change for the better. There was much early speculation about the Parliamentary results- we were at Tafica Fishing Camp, on the Zambezi, (thanks to the generosity of the owner Andrew Dawson and his wife Heidi- parents at Springvale House)- and we knew of the final results that Sunday- weeks before the final result was announced! For the first time in years a blanket of uncertainty was lifted off my shoulders- that `window` of hope and opportunity opened for me- it was not going to be about `mere survival` at Peterhouse from now on but growth and development. That feeling did not last long- the counting of the votes took days and it was obvious that the whole situation was being very cleverly manipulated. And so a `curtain` was drawn on that `window` and it remains there today. BUT we had a chance to look through it and now all have even greater hope and faith in what will come about- change will come. Sadly the beatings have started again, there is torture taking place and there are militia on farms. With a re-run expected for the Presidential Elections who knows how much some will have to suffer. We have implemented our Security Procedures in case of Civil Disorder, and we hope and pray that those in our care will not be caught in the middle of what might take place. We are confident that there will not be trouble at Peterhouse and that we will continue to be a place that mirrors what Zimbabwe should be like. School as usual Yesterday we played soccer in Harare, there is hockey at St George`s tomorrow and rugby against Gateway at home on Saturday. Springvale are at `Far and Wide` in Nyanga, the music bus will go into the School of Music tomorrow- it is school as usual! Everyone is again involved in something and now more than ever pupils are happy to be in the normal environment of our schools! And yes we still have problems- the generators give trouble, use too much fuel; Servcor say that food inflation-year on year- will reach ONE MILLION % at the end of May and our shops are empty- you cannot even buy beer! Pug, who still does the FFW buses, pointed out at our Staff Meeting today that a bus to Harare would cost 121 BILLION dollars at our next break- about 5 billion per pupil! We will carry on- uplifted by that `window` and reassured that change is possible and that it will lead to a better Zimbabwe for all. Yours sincerely, Jon Calderwood 9 May 2008
