DENISE OSBORNE We are sad to report that Denise Osborne passed away on 11 August 2009. She will long be remembered for her expertise and wonderful achievements in music. She was Director of Music at Ruzawi from 1969-1993 then joined the staff of Peterhouse in 1994 as Music Secretary. In 1996 she moved to Springvale House. Her contribution to music in all the schools was enormous and she touched the lives of so very many of her pupils.
DEVELOPMENTS AT SPRINGVALE HOUSE It struck me that it has been sometime since developments on our campus have been mentioned. One of the two new staff houses budgeted for is complete, our water system upgraded with a new reservoir, the big swimming pool's filtering system replaced with four new pumps/filters (gone hopefully is the green water!) and good progress on the two new dorm blocks has been made. The roofs are due to go up this weekend and work on the internal fittings begins thereafter, all in time for a November finish. It is both exciting and positive for our group of schools G A Peebles
PETREAN TO BE NEW HEADMASTER OF PHG I am delighted to announce the appointment of Dr John Bradshaw as Headmaster of Peterhouse Girls' School, on the retirement of Mrs Sue Davidson at the end of 2009. Dr Bradshaw attended Springvale School and Peterhouse, and holds a Ph.D from Cambridge University. He has been a farmer and university lecturer, and for the past seven years he has been Headmaster of Watershed College, near Marondera. John is married to Sue and has a son and a daughter. I am sure that we all look forward to welcoming John and Sue to Peterhouse Girls. He will be taking over a fine school, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Sue Davidson for her outstanding leadership over the past eight years. We are very fortunate that Sue has agreed to remain on our staff, and will be teaching mathematics at Peterhouse next year. Simon Hammond
2009 PETERHOUSE FESTIVAL The 2009 Festival was a great success! After a bitterly cold July, the sun came out and we had the first weekend of spring. This year we tried to incorporate all three schools, so we kicked off on Friday 31st July with a nursery school play, then rugby and hockey matches between Springvale House and Ruzawi. That evening there was an excellent Musical Soiree at Peterhouse Girls' School to show off their new Music Centre. On the Saturday there was a Petrean hockey match against boys but it was poorly supported. The Petrean Society hosted a braai that evening after the PE rugby game - again, support was poor. The Saturday highlight was undoubtedly the school play "The Importance of Being Earnest" which was a great success. The Sunday is always the main day of the Festival, and a large crowd was attracted to a host of different activities ranging from academic displays, sheep dog demonstrations, live pythons, leather-clad bikers doing burnouts, a rock band, jazz bands, marimbas, the St Johns' Pipe Band, choral recitals and string quartets, a kid's corner with jumping castles, tombola and face painting, market stalls selling crafts and home produce, international food and drink outlets including a French cafe, a Greek Taverna, curries, pig-on-the-spit, pancakes, english teas and a beer garden. The atmosphere was relaxed and festive, and a good day was had by all. Best of all, for a change we made a small profit! Barbie van Heerden (Cultural Director) culture@peterhouse.co.zw
VALE Jeremy Burgess (F76) who was working as a "freelance Ecology/Ag/Eco-tourism person" in Botswana sadly passed away in July 2009 due to complications from swine flu. Neil Grant (P76) who served in the RAF 1978 - 2000 then worked as a service engineer covering the North of Scotland, was tragically killed at work on 20 July 2009. He lived life to the full and was a great guy who will be sadly missed. We are sad to report the death of Ian Keith (M63) after St Andrew's University, Ian did 7 years of medical research. However, he found himself spending more time computing and ended up working in the IT industry and he was Director of a small UK based IT security company, Idsec Ltd. which specialises in system penetration testing.Sadly, Ian died in London the summer of 2009 after a six year fight against prostate cancer. He kept his charm, humour and optimism to the end. He talked with affection about his upbringing and education in Africa during his last few months. His brother Don Keith (M64) and step-brother Alexander (Sandy) Scott (E64) attended his funeral. Jason Mackie (P02) It is with deep regret that we report that Jason was killed instantly in action in Afghanistan on 14 May 2009 aged 21. He was supporting IX Company of the Welsh Guards when his vehicle struck an explosive device in the Basharan area of central Helmand. At the time of his death Jason was serving as a Viking All Terrain Vehicle Operator in 3rd Armoured Support Troop of the Armoured Support Group, Royal Marines. We are sad to report that Denise Osborne passed away on 11 August 2009. She will long be remembered for her expertise and wonderful achievements in the Music Department at Springvale House.
