Making the
timber section habitable
With a deadline of 28th March for a House Warming Party work progressed quickly to finish off work on the inside of the building to make it habitable. This involved mainly painting. The colours for the timber section of the cottage come from Dulux Traditional Range, they are: Ceilings – Lime White Walls – Pale Stone Internal architrave & window frames – Lime White (enamel) The exceptions to this were: Floors – Tung Oil Doors – single pack polyurethane Kitchen fireplace brickwork painted with homemade paint (crushed limestone from the cliffs at the end of Tyers St with a Bondcrete/water binder). The kitchen was fitted with the following: Second-hand cast iron sink with pine draining board on a carcass made from pitch-pine floorboards. Gas cooker by PARKINSON circa 1920's and a refurbished 1950 Westinghouse refrigerator. New island unit made of Tasmanian timbers (Celery Top, Southern Sassafras and pine). An 1850's food safe fits nicely beside the fireplace. After taking down the back porch it was rebuilt with 1 new redgum post and as much of the original timber as possible before covering with Fielders Z600 gal iron and half-round gutters. The ground level was dug down approx 150mm and 50mm clay pavers laid with garden bed retaining walls made from second-hand bricks and basalt rocks. The deadline for the House Warming was met but more work is needed to finish the project.
