PRE-EMPTIVE STRIKE BY SHEPPARTON COUNCIL
On Monday 20th September, Ian Martin City Council Officer phoned Jenny Houlihan Vice-President of Friends of Parkside Gardens with an "intelligence" warning that tests were to be conducted at the heritage recommended site.

Though heavy machinery would be used to test groundwater, everything would be left as they found it! He said he had expected a Heritage decision two weeks ago, and that the Council could not wait any longer as it was important for
" the environmental audit" to be done.

Jenny objected, saying that the Heritage Victorian decision was not yet to hand and that Mr Martin should inform the officers of this intention. Managing to convince them of his integrity, Council was permitted to conduct testing without causing damage and restoring the land on completion.

Mr Martin was also advised that the Heritage decision would be imminent. Sites were pegged and the bulldozer at the ready to destroy within minutes.

Friends of Parkside Gardens took umbrage with this lack of patience, after all, we have been four and a half years waiting for a decision that was politically correct.

The outcome was that thirty passionate people of all ages and abilities rallied within hours to storm the hallowed portals of Eastbank bearing placards and lead by "the grim reaper" and consort "skeleton".

Obviously, they were symbols of soil contamination and the imminent death of our valued heritage recommended site if City Council and VicUrban get their way! We await the final judgement.
