Real Estate Agent refuses to sell public parkland
at Port Fairy
The local real estate agent in Port Fairy, Garry Lockett, a principal of Lockett First National has declared a black-ban on the sale of the public park. He said that his company would not act for the vendor because
‘IT'S AGAINST OUR PRINCIPLES’
Good to see that principles can still win out over financial greed!
CONGRATULATIONS, GARY LOCKETT, FROM LOCKETT FIRST NATIONAL IN PORT FAIRY.
There is no doubt that the sale of ratepayer owned parkland by Councils looking to maximise the dollar over and above everything else will usually raise the ire of the community. And so it should. We all know you can never get it back.
In the Age on Saturday, Nov.13th there was a story about the anger of the folks in Port Fairy because their Council wants to sell a small park (about the size of a house block) for about 2.5 million dollars to developers and then use the money for new Council offices.
How would they feel if they were in Shepparton and knew that the Council here intends to ‘GIVE’ 21 hectares of man-made parkland to a developer (the State Government's very own developer, VicUrban ) for an unknown (even to Council) share of the profits. Nobody knows how much it will be. The figures are pretty rubbery!!!!!
It could be much less than 1 million dollars the figure which our Council has bandied around as a possible return to ratepayers. ONLY one million dollars maximum for all that residential land!!!!! And then the land and the associated heritage has gone forever.
